KAMLOOPS – Controlling the game from start to finish, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team picked up their second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars.
Caylah Lemon and
Katie Chun both scored the first Canada West goals of their WolfPack career's to provide the offence, while
Marissa Young recorded the shutout.
"It went kind of how we predicted and planned for," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "Mount Royal are a tough team to play against, they're well-organized and very competitive. We knew it was going to be a physical battle today, but we prepared in the right way and executed our game plan."
The win makes it three games in a row that the WolfPack have earned points in. After starting the season with back-to-back losses TRU is now 2-2-1 on the season and continuing to climb the Canada West standings.
After TRU held much of the early possession, Lemon opened the scoring in the 29th minute. A great long ball forward from the WolfPack defence found a hard-charging
Emily Clark. Clark did well to twist and turn around a Cougar defender before being taken down in the 18-yard box to draw the penalty kick. Lemon stepped up to the spot and made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net. After ringing a penalty kick off the post earlier in the season, the goal was a big one for the second-year defender's confidence.
"We gave Caylah credit after the game for controlling that emotional challenge of stepping up to the spot with all the pressure on her," said Pennington. "She put it away really well."
Chun tallied the insurance marker just minutes into the second half. A long ball into the Cougar 18-yard box bounced around before Chun was able to put it away and make the score 2-0.
From there TRU was able to run out the remainder of the game. Playing in her hometown of Calgary
Marissa Young made some six saves in the WolfPack net while the defence was excellent to stymie the Cougars and send TRU to the victory.
"A big shoutout to
Marissa Young, she was a big reason we got that shutout today," said Pennington. "For her to pick up a shutout in front of friends and family was really big. I thought
Alexis Virgo and
Raiya Rumo as the two centre-backs were outstanding - especially Raiya. She epitomized everything about our gameplan, about who we are as a team, and threw herself in-front of three or four really good chances for MRU and put her body on the line."
The WolfPack are back in action tomorrow when they continue their road trip by taking on the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Lethbridge.
