WolfPack sweep Huskies, push winning streak to five

KAMLOOPS  – Make it five wins in a row and the longest winning streak in nearly five years for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team, after they defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 80-74 Saturday night.

TRU knocked down 11 three-pointers, their second-highest mark this season, and held the Huskies to just four points over the final four minutes of play to complete the weekend sweep.

Denys Bachurin led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals for the 'Pack. Asher Mayan was 3-4 from beyond-the-arc en route to 20 points while Daniel Bost and Cyrus Harrison finished with 17 and 15 respectively.

Bachurin had seven points in the opening quarter for the WolfPack and they limited Saskatchewan to just 11 points as a team to jump out to the 17-11 lead.

After the Huskies responded in the second quarter to tie the game at 36-36 at the halftime break, the third quarter was all TRU.

An 11-0 run by the WolfPack to close out the final few minutes of the quarter was capped off by a steal from Harrison and a smooth layup from Mayan to give the 'Pack a 60-50 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.

The Huskies refused to go away without a fight, however. Saskatchewan's Alexander Dewar and Tyrese Potoma hit back-to-back threes to open the fourth quarter and Saskatchewan tied things up at 72-72 with three minutes left to play. Once again the 'Pack found an answer. Shut down defence combined with four points from Harrison and three from Mayan allowed TRU to pull out the six-point victory.

TRU's hot run moves their record to 5-5 on the year and sees them in the thick of a battle for playoff positioning. The WolfPack will get the chance to further solidify their playoff place when they host the UBC Thunderbirds (5-5) inside the TCC next weekend.
