Woldeyes scores first career goal, WolfPack tie Cougars

KAMLOOPS – Berea Woldeyes opened her Canada West scoring account to help the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team secure a 1-1 tie with the Regina Cougars in Saskatchewan Sunday afternoon.

Esi Lufo picked up an assist on the Woldeyes goal while Cassandra De Amaral made five stops in the TRU net. Sierra Kolodziej scored for Regina with Kareena Anderson making a pair of saves.

The main action in the game happened early, with both goals coming within the first ten minutes of play.

After Kolodziej scored for the Cougars just two minutes into the game the WolfPack were able to respond almost immediately.

Lufo corralled a throw-in deep in Cougars territory, drove past a defender a delivered the ball perfectly into the box where an on-rushing Woldeyes was able to slip it into the back of the net.

The teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the contest but neither was able to find the back of the net again after their frenetic start.

Hawan Abdissa helped create TRU's best chance to pull out the win late in the contest but her twisting effort went just wide of the net.

Making her return to Regina to face the team she played with for two seasons, De Amaral made a pair of important saves late in the game to preserve the tie for TRU.

The result moves the 'Pack to 2-4-1 on the year. They find themselves just one point behind the UVic Vikes for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division as the season reaches the midway point.

TRU will now return to Kamloops for a pair of games next weekend. They will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at Hillside Stadium before welcoming the Calgary Dinos in a game at MacArthur Island Field 2 on Saturday.
