KAMLOOPS – Four different players found the back of the net to power the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night.
Hawan Abdissa,
Katie Chun,
Ainsley Grether and
Emily Clark all scored for TRU while Rylie Mooney and Hailey Slobodian answered for Lethbridge.
TRU led 3-0 at the halftime break before Lethbridge tallied a pair in the second frame.
"I thought in the first half we did everything we wanted to, coming in 3-0 at halftime is what you want," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "We maybe took our foot off the gas a little too much in the second half, but we gave some opportunities to some first years and they came in and showed really well so we are really happy with their minutes."
Esi Lufo recorded a pair assists for the 'Pack to move her to five on the year, the second most in the conference.
"She's such a talented player, she's super intelligent and finds pockets of space and has the technical ability to get the ball to players with little passes," said Pennington on the play of the Albanian forward. "She's been great and has been our most influential player today, caused them problems all game long and was probably unlucky not to get one in the net."
Cassandra De Amaral earned the victory for TRU two saves while Bridie Harding was heroic in the Lethbridge net making eight stops before being forced to leave due to injury
After recording eight shots on goal in the opening 15 minutes, the WolfPack finally found a breakthrough courtesy of Abdissa who scored her first of the campaign.
Alexis Virgo launched a ball into the box that got past a Pronghorns defender and Abdissa was in the right place at the right time to put the ball into the back of the net.
A beautiful passing play allowed the 'Pack to double their lead in the 34th minute.
A long run of passes ended with a give-and-go between Lufo and Chun before Chun powered the ball into the back of the net for her first of the season.
"Fantastic for them to get on the scoresheet, a couple great goals," said Pennington of Abdissa and Chun. "Really nice to get those goals from a wide space and an attacking midfielder so we'll regroup for a tough game against a Calgary team tomorrow."
Grether scored to make it three right before halftime when she finished off a feed from Lufo for her third goal of the season.
The Pronghorns refused to go away with out a fight however pulled one goal back right after the halftime break.
A ball in from Kiandra Boulter saw Mooney rise highest to nod it down and send it back into the net to cut the 'Pack lead.
The score remained 3-1 throughout much of the second half before both Clark and Slobodian scored in extra time.
TRU is back in action tomorrow when they host the Calgary Dinos at 7:30 p.m. in a rare game down at MacArthur Island Field 2. Lethbridge will also play tomorrow when they travel to Kelowna to face the Heat at 5:30 p.m.
