Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

‘Pack take care of Griffins in straight-sets

QUICK FIRE
  • A complete team effort paved the way for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team to secure a 3-0 (34-32, 25-13, 25-18) victory over the MacEwan Griffins inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Keira Gent was the lead of three-pronged attack for TRU with 13 kills and five aces in the game. Brooklyn Olfert added 12 kills and four aces of her own while Ema Palkovicova racked up nine kills on just 17 swings to finish with a scintillating .471 hitting percentage. Libby Meldrum directed the offence to the tune of 34 assists and four blocks while Olivia Andulajevic finished the night with a game-high 17 digs.
  • Mariah Bereziuk led the Griffins with ten kills while setter Payton Shimoda finished with 28 assists.
  • TRU dominated at the service line with 15 aces to MacEwan's 5 while also outblocking GMU 18-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was by far the closest of the match, with the score going all the way to 34-32. A late 4-1 WolfPack run keyed by an ace at the line from Gent allowed TRU to take a 23-18 lead. The Griffins were able to answer with a run of their own however. With Arden Butler at the service line, the Griffins ripped off six-straight points to earn set point at 24-23. TRU was able to fight off set point five times before back-to-back kills from Olfert gave TRU the set.
  • TRU dominated the second set, hitting .500 per cent as a team en route to the dominant 12-point set victory.
  • The 'Pack were able to put the finishing touches on the match in the third. An 8-2 WolfPack run highlighted by two-straight aces from Olfert gave the hosts a 22-15 edge they wouldn't surrender en route to taking the match.

NOTABLE
  • The game was the second time this season that TRU has won a match in straight-sets.
  • Palkovicova's hitting percentage of .471% was her highest mark of the season and the second-most efficient night of her WolfPack career.
  • Gent's mark of .321% was also the most efficient of her season.
  • TRU moves to 4-9 on the season with the result where they are just two games out of the Canada West playoff picture.

QUOTABLE – Chad Grimm, head coach
  • The first set was a battle. We had a little bit of a lead that we let slip, they had set point a few times but we managed to hold our nerve and get that win. Then we settled in, especially on the defensive side of the ball, our block did a better job taking away space. Overall it was a good performance.
  • I think sometimes when you're a young team and you have a bit of a lead you think you're going to score four or five times on the next point and just finish it off. So I was happy with the patience that we showed and just playing one point at a time and playing that point as well as we could.
  • Offensively everyone had a pretty good night. Ema was super efficient, Kiera did a good job, Brooklyn was effective and I think early in the match Libby did a good job of getting our middles going and that opened up more space for our wing hitters.

UP NEXT
  • The two teams will play again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. inside the TCC.
