Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack complete straight-sets sweep

QUICK FIRE
  • For the second night in a row the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team overpowered the visiting MacEwan Griffins in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-13) victory inside the TCC.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Reigning U SPORTS Athlete of the Week Matthew Hamilton led the way offensively for TRU with 10 kills in the contest. Sam Flowerday finished with nine kills to go along with five service aces. Rylan Ibbetson had an efficient eight kills on his 14 attacks.
  • Aidan McLennan led GMU with six kills. Setter Alexander Lyndon had another strong night with 15 assists.
  • A major key in the game for TRU was their performance at the service line where they racked up nine aces and surrendered just two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Griffins started the game with an early run thanks to strong serving from Mason Moore as the visitors jumped out to a 6-3 lead. After knotting the game up at 12-12 the 'Pack went on a massive 7-1 swing keyed by a pair of Flowerday aces to jump out to a 19-13 lead. From there the hosts were able to see out the frame.
  • The Griffins kept things closer early in the second set before the WolfPack exploded late. It was the visitors who led 17-16 before TRU rallied to take the set. Middles Archie Golding and Corbin Ockerman each registered key kills down the stretch to allow TRU to pull out a 2-0 lead.
  • The third set was never in doubt. TRU used a 13-4 run in the middle of the frame to jump out to a massive lead before rookie Trey Soondarsingh finished the match with the first kill of his university career.

NOTABLE
  • The back-to-back 3-0 sweeps for the 'Pack was the first time they've done that since January of 2020.
  • Flowerday's five aces ties his career-best mark.
  • The win was an important one for a WolfPack squad that now holds a record of 7-7, just one game back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference standings.

QUOTABLE – Pat Hennelly, head coach
  • There were some lulls tonight. The second set I thought we were playing well but just some errors started creeping up but I think the guys were just calm, collected and got the job done when they needed.
  • Yesterday Flowerday was the star attacking and today it was his serving that busted the game open.
  • Credit to the guys it's not very often you get a 3-0, 3-0 weekend and this was a great way to start our homestand.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will remain in Kamloops this week as they get set to welcome the UBC Okanagan Heat inside the TCC.
