Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack stay hot, roll to sweep of Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team started their weekend with a bang after they downed the UBC Okanagan Heat by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert was the key to the offence for TRU, racking up 15 kills and a pair of service aces. Ema Palkovicova added nine kills while Kate Lamothe had six kills and four service aces. Addison Witkowski led the way defensively with five total blocks and Libby Meldrum had 29 assists.
  • Hellen Lacava led the way for UBCO with eight kills and four service aces.
  • TRU outhit UBCO at a .235% - .085% pace while also putting down 12 aces in just three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was the closest of the night. UBCO led by as many as five points and held the advantage all the way until an Olfert kill tied the match at 20-20. From there, Ella Sladden put together a dominant serving run that allowed TRU to take set point at 24-20. Olfert ended the set with a big kill at 25-21.
  • The 'Pack forced the Heat into seven attack errors en route to taking a comfortable 25-18 set victory. The turning point in the set came with the Heat leading 12-11. Lamothe stepped to the line and ripped three-straight aces to give TRU a 14-12 edge. From there the 'Pack ran away down the stretch for the win.
  • The story was much the same in the third set. The teams traded points to 19-18 TRU before the 'Pack dominated late in the frame. A 5-0 run to end the frame was keyed by yet another Sladden serving run as TRU took the set and match.

NOTABLE
  • The win was TRU's third straight-sets sweep in a row, making the first time in the program's CW history that they have won 12-consecutive sets.
  • The result was also the WolfPack's first-ever 3-0 sweep of UBCO in the 27 CW games they have played.
  • TRU moves to 6-9 on the season and are now 4-1 in their last four games.

QUOTABLE – Chad Grimm, head coach
  • I didn't think we started great, thought we were a little tentative or a little nervous but the redeeming quality that we've shown over the past month is that we've been able to stay patient and turn it around when things aren't going well. I'm glad the girls found their stability, this is a tough serving team and they went on a couple runs but we didn't let it get to us too much so overall it was good performance.
  • Coming into the year I figured Kate could have a pretty significant role but then she was injured for most of the preseason so it was hard for her to get rolling. She definitely provides some punch on the wing for us and Keira has done a tremendous job as well so having both of those options to support Brooklyn has been great. Having Ella Sladden and Madison Maichin come off the bench and do a good job provides a lot of help so the overall contribution from everyone was good.

UP NEXT
  • These teams will meet again tomorrow inside the TCC with a scheduled start time of 3:00 p.m.
