Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

‘Pack nearly pull off upset of No. 4 Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  • They came within four points of pulling off a monumental victory, but in the end the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team came up just short of victory in a 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-10) loss to the Trinity Western Spartans.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • 25 kills, four service aces and a pair of blocks from Brooklyn Olfert paced the 'Pack. Rookie Keira Gent added a further 13 kills while middle Addison Witkowski hit. 600 per cent while also racking up four blocks.
  • Kaylee Plouffe was dominant for TWU with 22 kills on just 36 swings. Kirsten Kampman added ten more kills while Kendra Kern finished with 46 assists.
  • TRU racked up 10 aces at the line but TWU won the battle at the net with 20 blocks to TRU's 15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU was all over the Spartans in the first set, driving down four service aces en route to the win. Trailing 14-12, TRU went on a 9-3 run that featured three kills and three aces from Olfert to give the hosts a 22-17 edge. From there the 'Pack saw out the set with a Palkovicova ace.
  • The 'Pack were able to ride that momentum into the second as another strong Olfert serving run gave them the early 7-3 lead. The Spartans battle back to tie the match at 19-19 before TRU pulled away late.
  • A tight third set saw TRU come just four points away from victory. A kill from Gent gave TRU a lead at 21-19 before the Spartans found another gear. The visitors scored six of the final seven points in the frame to stay alive in the match.
  • After TWU flipped the script and took the fourth, the Spartans were able to snag victory in the fifth. After trailing by five early, the WolfPack cut that deficit all the way to two at 12-10 before TWU pulled away for the win.

NOTABLE
  • Olfert's 25 kills and four service aces both tie her career-best marks.
  • TRU moves to 6-10 on the season and are now 4-2 in their last six games.

QUOTABLE – Chad Grimm, head coach
  • I thought we played well, we played with good energy and were good from the service line early. We had chances to win and were up late in the third but at the end of the day I thought that in critical situations we just didn't take care of the ball well enough.
  • A little bit of panic set in and we tried to rush to the finish line. We haven't had success against the upper echelon in our league and that showed tonight, we couldn't continue to play our game in the moments where we needed to.

UP NEXT
  • These teams will meet again tomorrow inside the TCC with a scheduled start time of 2:30 p.m.
