Long-range shooting sees WolfPack stay close with Timberwolves

QUICK FIRE
  • They shot the lights out from distance but a young Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team fell just short of earning their third win of the season in a 78-69 loss at the hands of the UNBC Timberwolves.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Veteran Priyanca Sundher and rookie Jocelyn Orr led a three-point parade for the 'Pack with five and four three-pointers respectively. Sundher led the team with 15 points and five rebounds while Orr added 13 points of her own. Kelsey Cruz rounded out the WolfPack scorers in double-digits with 12 points.
  • Svetlana Boykova and Rebecca Landry powered the UNBC offence with 20 and 19 points apiece. Boykova added 17 rebounds for the impressive double-double.
  • TRU knocked down 13 three-pointers to UNBC's four but lost the battle on the glass by a tally of 46-33.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first quarter it was the Timberwolves coming out the hungrier team, led by six points from Boykova in the first four minutes of play, as UNBC built an eight-point advantage. A Sundher triple cut into the deficit, followed by a three by Sydney Vollrath, as TRU looked to chip away at the TWolves lead. Late in the frame, Orr banked in not one, but two long three-pointers, to help the 'Pack lead 21-19 after ten minutes of play.
  • The Timberwolves started the second quarter on a 9-4 run, as veteran swing Landry scored seven early points on a variety of looks. The WolfPack assault from long-range continued, however as a Cruz triple knotted the game at 28-28 and gave TRU their sixth three-pointer of the contest. Back-to-back threes from Amrit Manak and Adaiah Tupas-Singh built the Timberwolves a moderate cushion as the clock trickled down in the half. After 20 minutes of play, UNBC held a 42-33 lead.
  • UNBC continued that momentum into the third quarter when a tough TWolves defence sparked the visitors to a 13-2 run to start the half. The visitors kept pushing in the third and held a 65-46 lead entering the final 10 minutes of play.
  • TRU found an answer in the fourth, however. They cut the deficit to 11 points on an 8-0 run, thanks to another Jocelyn Orr triple and a Danijela Kovacevic steal and score in the opening minutes of the fourth frame. The 'Pack continued to push the action, as Orr and Sundher made threes, cutting it to a five-point game on a 17-3 run with less than four minutes remaining.
  • After the lead was cut to just one, the veteran combo of Landry and Boykova each got layups to go to re-establish an ounce of breathing room for the TWolves late in the quarter. Eventually, thanks to an 8-0 run to conclude the game, UNBC would hold on for a 78-69 victory

NOTABLE
  • Sundher finished just one point shy of tying her career-high in points.
  • Orr set new career marks in points (13), minutes played (33), three-pointers (4), rebounds (4) and assists (3).
