Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack close out Cascades, start 2024 in win column

QUICK FIRE
  • A complete 40-minute performance powered the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team to an 83-67 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Denys Bachurin was on fire from the floor for TRU, going 9-13 from the field en route to putting up 23 points and a trio of steals. Daniel Bost (16 points), Jason Okoro (14) and Evan Smith (11), rounded out the players in double-digits for TRU.
  • Dylan Kinley led the Cascades with 14 points while Ismael Hernandez added 12.
  • Turnovers were key in the game. The 'Pack stole the ball 13 times from Fraser Valley and put up 26 points off turnovers compared to the Cascades 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Cascades hold a slim 20-18 edge after the opening ten minutes. The visitors knocked down 58 per cent of their shots as a team and were led by six points from Jake Willemsen.
  • The second quarter belonged to TRU. A 13-4 run in the middle of the frame that featured seven points from Bachurin allowed them to turn a five point deficit into a 33-29 lead. Bost and Bachurin both hit three-pointers down the stretch to send TRU into the break with an eight-point edge.
  • With neither team able to make much ground in the third quarter the game all came down to the fourth. A TRU team that has struggled to put away teams this season started the fourth on a 12-0 run and never looked back to earn their second win of the season.

NOTABLE
  • Bachurin's 23 points were the second-most in his WolfPack career.
  • Evan Smith, who entered the weekend second in the conference in three point percentage went 3-4 from long-distance in the game.
  • TRU moves to 2-5 on the season with the win while the Cascades fall to 3-6.

QUOTABLE – Denys Bachurin, third-year forward
  • Absolutely it's nice to start the second semester with a win, we lost a lot of close games last semester that we thought we should have won. We are fighting for a playoff spot so it's huge for us to beat a team that we are fighting for that spot.
  • The shots were just kind of falling for me. My teammates made very good passes that led to me getting open shots so I have to thank my teammates and coach for running plays for me.

UP NEXT
  • These teams will be back in action tomorrow night inside the TCC in a game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
