Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Strong effort from ‘Pack comes up just shy in Winnipeg

QUICK FIRE
  • Nearly every set went the distance as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the Winnipeg Wesmen in a 3-1 (23-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-20) loss on the road.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert was electric for the second night in a row. The product of Winnipeg racked up 23 kills and 15 digs in her return to The Peg. Ema Palkovicova added 14 kills and a pair of service aces while Libby Meldrum recorded 47 assists.
  • Grace Vallis had 17 kills and eight total blocks to lead the Wesmen to victory.
  • Winnipeg's big advantage in the match came at the net where they recorded 15 blocks to TRU's six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A 7-2 WolfPack run in the middle stages of the first set paved the way for their lone set victory of the match. A strong serving run from Keira Gent allowed TRU to jump out to an 18-11 lead. The Wesmen rallied to make the set close but a Winnipeg service error gave TRU the victory at 25-23.
  • The 'Pack had a trio of set points in the second set but the victory wasn't meant to be. Rookie Myah Cressy had a massive solo block and TRU led at 24-23, 26-25 and 27-26 before the Wesmen fought back to take the set with a block at 29-27.
  • From there Winnipeg was able to close out the match with scores of 25-22 and 25-20 to ensure that the teams split the two matches that they played this weekend.

NOTABLE
  • Meldrum's 106 assists over the two games this weekend were by far the most of her young WolfPack career.
  • After not recording 20 or more kills in a match yet this season, Olfert – who was named the TRU Female Athlete of the Year in her rookie campaign – exploded for 47 over the two games in her hometown.
  • TRU moves to 3-9 on the season with the result.

QUOTABLE – Chad Grimm, head coach
  • Overall it was a great effort. Brooklyn had another great night for us offensively, we passed the ball really well and did a solid job receiving.
  • At the end of the day I think we just had troubles stopping their middle and their wing hitters out of system. I think we put ourselves in a good spot defensively and just couldn't close it out.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will return to the TCC for their first home games of 2024 next weekend when they play host to the MacEwan Griffins.
