Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heat take down WolfPack with extra-time marker

QUICK FIRE
  • Senior night for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team ended in heartbreak after the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat scored in the final minute of play to squeak out a 3-2 victory.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU came out of the gates roaring. The hosts fired multiple shots towards net early with both Juli La Rotta and Woldeyes earning scoring chances.
  • It was the Heat who opened the scoring against the run of play however. With just one minute left to play before halftime, Abigail Taneda fed the ball to Gross who let go a long-distance effort that sailed into the net and gave the visitors the 1-0 lead through 45 minutes of play.
  • Undeterred after going behind, the WolfPack started the second half how they started the game, on the front foot and controlling play.
  • That persistence paid off when Geremia equalled the score in the 52nd minute. Woldeyes sent a long free-kick into the box that bounced around before the third-year defender slotted it past the UBCO goalkeeper.
  • TRU took the lead less than ten minutes later. Jocelyn Orr played a ball forward into the path of Grether who made no mistake with a left-footed finish inside the 18-yard box for her third of the season.
  • This time it was the Heat's turn to fight back after falling behind. Sun scored her first of the night to knot the game up in the 78th minute.
  • A spectacular triple-save from De Amaral kept the game even heading into extra-time before disaster struck for the 'Pack. The referee judged that a TRU defender pulled down Sun inside the box and the forward made no mistake on the ensuing penalty shot to send the Heat to victory.

NOTABLE

  • The loss was a devastating one for the WolfPack playoff chances. The team now sits at 4-6-2 and are five points behind the 6-5-1 Heat for the fourth and final playoff spot with just two games left to play.

UP NEXT
