Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

La Rotta tallies early but Cougars come back to defeat ‘Pack

QUICK FIRE
  • Rookie sensation Juli La Rotta fired a goal in the first half but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team couldn't keep the host MRU Cougars from clawing their way back into the game in a 2-1 defeat on the road.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • La Rotta scored her fourth of the season with captain Ainsley Grether supplying the assist. Cassandra De Amaral made four saves in the TRU net.
  • Gabrielle Linford and Taylor Young replied for the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Needing three points to keep their playoff hopes alive, the WolfPack came roaring out of the gate. La Rotta opened the scoring just eight minutes into the contest after Grether played a perfectly weighted pass that sent the rookie in on a breakaway that she tucked into the back of the net.
  • That lead was nearly doubled in the 29th minute of play but Sophia Branby's long-range effort crashed off the crossbar.
  • The Cougars evened the scoreline just ten minutes before the halftime whistle. A scramble in the 18-yard box eventually worked its way to Linford who made no mistake to score the equalizing goal.
  • De Amaral made a couple key saves in the early portion of the second half, but the 'Pack were unable to stop the Cougars from scoring the all-important go-ahead goal.
  • That goal came in the 77th minute when Ruby Szautner found Young who made the score 2-1..

NOTABLE
  • The loss officially sunk the WolfPack's hopes of making a return to the Canada West postseason. The team holds a record of 4-7-2 on the year.
  • La Rotta moves into a tie for fifth in program history for goals in a single season with four.
  • Grether's assist gives her six points on the season, matching her own career-high and good enough to put her in a tie for fifth in program history for points in a single season.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will play the final game of their 2024-25 campaign on Sunday when they travel to Victoria to face the UVic Vikes.
