Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack fall to Bisons in season opener

QUICK FIRE
  • The first game of the season for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team went the way of the hosts as the 'Pack fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) to the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A four-point Bisons run in the middle of the first set allowed the hosts to take the opening frame by a score of 25-19. A massive block by Ibbetson gave TRU their first lead of the set at 6-5. The two teams then traded points until the Bisons strung together four-in-a-row to jump out to a 17-13 lead. Two blocks in three plays late in the frame courtesy of Hamilton saw the 'Pack make it close at 22-19 but from there the hosts closed out the frame. Ibbetson recorded three kills and an ace in the set.
  • A tight second set went right down to the wire but it was the Bisons that pulled it out. A solo block from Margerison gave the 'Pack a 12-9 edge early. After the Bisons pulled back even the teams went blow-for-blow all the way until a solo block from Walker Sodaro evened the score at 22-22. That's as close as the 'Pack would come though as the Bisons tallied three of the next four points to take the set 25-23.
  • The WolfPack opened up a 7-4 lead in the third before the service line once again proved pivotal for the Bisons. Powered by a pair of aces the hosts roared back with a 6-1 run to take a lead at 10-8 that they wouldn't surrender again en route to completing the sweep.

NOTABLE
  • Rookie middle Lincoln Wagner made his first career start for TRU.
  • TRU had an impressive three solo and 18 assisted blocks but also made 22 serving errors in the match to Manitoba's 13.

QUOTABLE – Head coach Pat Hennelly.
  •  It was a rough night from the service line. We played great volleyball through stretches but lost out on the serve and pass game.
  • There were some moments where we gained momentum, but couldn't sustain any pressure on Manitoba.
  • I was happy with our block and defensive game and we are looking forward to tomorrow.
