Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Resolute WolfPack battle Spartans to scoreless draw

QUICK FIRE
  • It was solid performance from start to finish for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team that earned a 0-0 draw with the TWU Spartans in Langley.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Luca Ortu earned the shutout for the 'Pack with four saves in the contest. Captain Elijah Dos Santos was once again impressive with a strong performance at the back as well as a shot on goal.
  • Austin Petri got the shutout for TWU. Both Thomas Powell and Charles Nana had a pair of shots on goal for the hosts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ortu made his first big stop of the night 32 minutes into the game. Powell whipped a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box that was destined for the bottom corner before the first-year goalkeeper turned it around the post.
  • The 'Pack came close to opening the scoring in the 63rd minute. Jonathan Rinaldi played a long free-kick into the box that Mikkel Rosenlund got on the end of and he sent a pass to a pair of open attackers at the back post but Petri was able to poke it out of bounds for the corner.
  • After Ortu came up big to smother a shot from inside the 18-yard box, the WolfPack began to get the better of the game as the night wore on.
  • The WolfPack's best chance to score came deep in extra time when Kirnon delivered a free-kick into the box that Dos Santos rose highest for, but his headed effort was stopped by Petri.
NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 1-9-2 on the season and kept their playoff hopes alive with the result. The 'Pack will now need to win out in their four remaining games of the season and hope that other results around the league fall their way to sneak into fourth place.
  • TWU is that team in fourth place, they hold a record of 5-4-2.
  • The WolfPack won the season series with the Spartans, earning a win and a draw against TWU.
  • The shutout was the first in the WolfPack career of Ortu.
QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, John Antulov)
  • It was a 90 minute game. We've been really good for 70-75 minutes and then we have a little breakdown and it costs us, but today the guys battled through it, they had a really good mentality and worked together as a group so it's good to see them get something out of that.
  • After yesterday's loss – which could have been pretty deflating – for us to be able to match a good TWU side that is going to cause a lot of people problems and battle them is really good. Good for our mentality moving forward for our final four games.
  • In a tough year Elijah Dos Santos has really stepped up into a leadership role, even with everything that's been happening over the last three or four weeks he has continued to battle and want to drive this team to get results. In these situations it can be easy for guys to put their heads down but our leaders, including Elijah, have been really good at continuing to move forward, so I'm really happy with how he has responded.
  • I thought Luca Ortu was really good today with some key saves and kept us in the game, so I'm really happy for him too.
UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Kelowna for a pair of games with the UBC Okanagan Heat.
