Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

‘Pack can’t overcome early deficit in loss to Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • After falling in the first two sets the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team couldn't mount a comeback in a 3-1 (25-17, 32-30, 21-25, 25-17) loss to the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday was great for the 'Pack, finishing with a game-high 19 kills while also adding a pair of aces. Rylan Ibbetson added a further 13 kills and two solo blocks while Walker Sodaro had 24 assists.
  • Nimo Benne was the leader for UFV with 13 kills and two aces. Roan McCarthy (10 kills), Ryan Hampe (seven kills) and Tyson Ardell (seven kills) all helped UFV secure the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The UFV offence was clicking early. Fraser Valley took the first set in commanding fashion thanks in large part to a 5-1 run to start the match. Ibbetson had three kills in the set to lead TRU, but the 'Pack couldn't close the early deficit as they fell 25-17.
  • A pivotal second set could have gone either way. Trailing 24-21, Back-to-back blocks from rookie Lincoln Wagner helped TRU fight off three consecutive set points to tie the match at 24-24. Kills from Matthew Hamilton and pair from Ibbetson saw TRU fight off three more set points before finally earning their first chance to take the set at 28-27. It wasn't meant to be for the 'Pack however, as UFV took the marathon second set by a tally of 32-30.
  • The WolfPack were able to rebound from the disappointment of dropping that frame to win the third set. Flowerday had seven of the team's 16 kills as TRU hit .400 per cent as a team and took the set on back-to-back kills from Ibbetson and Flowerday.
  • A comeback wasn't in the cards however. UFV ran away with the fourth set by a score of 25-17 to take both the frame and the match.
NOTABLE
  • The loss moves TRU to 2-3 while the Cascades improve to 1-6.
  • For Flowerday, who led all of Canada in kills last season, his 19 were the most he's fired down so far this season.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • Another tough Friday night, our slow start allowed UFV to gain momentum. Sam Flowerday had a great night offensively but we need to regroup for tomorrow.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack and Cascades will be back in action tomorrow evening in Abbotsford with a scheduled start time of 4:45 p.m.
