Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Service errors hurt ‘Pack in loss to Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • For the second night in a row the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team tried to mount a comeback after falling into an early hole but came up shy in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 26-28, 25-19) loss to the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday fired in a team-high 16 kills while adding a pair of aces to lead the 'Pack. Rylan Ibbetson added 12 kills and Matthew Hamilton eight. Middle Gavin Margerison finished the night with three kills and four block assists.
  • Nimo Benne responded with 16 kills of his own for UFV. Roan McCarthy added eight while Jonas Van Huizen finished with 34 assists and four aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An early 8-1 run to start the match powered the way for UFV in the first set. The hosts held off a late WolfPack push that featured a pair of kills from Flowerday to take the first set 25-20.
  • The Cascades eked out victory in the second. Two Van Huizen aces early in the second put the Cascades up 5-1, but TRU stormed back to tie it up through the middle of the set thanks to a kill from Lincoln Wagner. UFV edged out a 24-22 advantage after a kill and block back-to-back before the hosts sealed it at 25-23.
  • The WolfPack hit .438 per cent as a team to take the third set. The Cascades had a 20-15 lead in the third after another good start, but a late WolfPack surge allowed them to tie it up at 23. The teams traded points, but a block from Margerison and Dylan Annala proved decisive to take it 28-26.
  • That was as close as the 'Pack would come however as UFV took the fourth 25-19 to take set and the match.
NOTABLE
  • The loss moves TRU to 2-4 while the Cascades improve to 2-6.
  • TRU's 29 service errors – compared to UFV's 19 - proved costly in a tight match.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • Tough night from the service line, we missed 29 serves making our job way harder. Our guys battled but we couldn't get into rhythm and keep any sustained pressure on them.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will return to Kamloops for their final home games of the first semester next weekend when they host the TWU Spartans on Nov. 22-23 inside the TCC.
