Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Cascades hand WolfPack first defeat in battle of top 5 teams

QUICK FIRE
  • It was the host No. 3 ranked UFV Cascades that came out on top in a marathon battle between two schools ranked at the top of the nation as they defeated the No. 4 Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team by a score of 3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-10) in Abbotsford.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert was electric for TRU, finishing the night with 21 kills and just four errors on her 41 attacks. The fourth-year from Winnipeg added an ace, a solo block and 11 digs in the match. Hadley Schmidt had 29 assists for TRU and middle Addison Witkowski provided on solo and two assisted blocks.
  • A three-headed attack of Lauren Attieh (17 kills), Mandi Feist (16 kills) and Talia Attieh (10 kills) powered UFV to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A game that featured momentum swing after momentum swing started in UFV's favour. The hosts stormed out of the gates and held TRU to just a .031 hitting percentage as they finished the frame on a 13-3 run to take the first set 25-15.
  • The WolfPack returned that favour in the second. Olfert had six kills in the frame and a 6-1 WolfPack run to start the set that featured a pair of kills by Maria Dancheva set the tone as TRU ran away with a 25-17 set win in the second.
  • TRU kept that momentum rolling into the third. The WolfPack offence was firing on all cylinders as five kills from Olfert and three from the setter Schmidt sent TRU to a 25-15 victory.
  • After UFV rallied to take the fourth, the match came down to a fifth and final set. The teams traded points all the way to 6-6 before a 4-0 UFV run gave them a hold on the game that they wouldn't relinquish en route to the 15-10 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The loss drops TRU to 4-1 and stops them from setting a new mark with the first-ever 5-0 start to a Canada West season in program history.
  • UFV sits atop the Canada West conference with a record of 6-1.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • I thought UFV came out hot, they came out firing and kind of ran away with the first set. We made a push back in sets two and three but they didn't go away. They started to score more on tips and rolls and we didn't adjust well enough.
  • They found a rhythm as a group and we had some individuals that had it going and some that didn't have their best nights, which obviously happens.
  • We never found that flow as a team, so we have to be better tomorrow and that's on all of us, players and coaches alike.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will battle the Cascades again tomorrow evening in a match scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Abbotsford.
