Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Heat down WolfPack on emotional night in the TCC

QUICK FIRE
  • On a night that was about much more than results on the court the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team fell by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18) to the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat. The match was book-ended by a pair of emotional ceremonies inside the TCC. Prior to the game, Owen Waterhouse made a triumphant return to the court and fired home a ceremonial first serve to a standing ovation from a capacity crowd. After the game, Erin Walter presented the first-ever Owyn McInnis Memorial – Men's Volleyball Award to Sam Flowerday.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Dylan Annala and Rylan Ibbetson powered the WolfPack offence, recording 15 and 12 kills respectively. Rookie middle Lincoln Wagner finished the night with two solo and two assisted blocks.
  • Seba Manuel racked up 11 kills for the Heat and Zach van Geel recorded 33 assists. The Heat dominated the battle at the net with 19 blocks to TRU's eight and were led in that effort by Thys Weststrate who finished with seven block assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Heat hit .333 per cent as a team en route to taking the first set. Annala and Ibbetson both had five kills for the 'Pack, but five blocks in the set proved to be the difference as UBCO took the frame 25-20. What was a close match at 20-19 in favour of the Heat was blown wide open as the visitors ended the set on a 5-1 run.
  • UBCO kept that momentum going in a second set that saw them jump out to an early 15-9 advantage. Sam Flowerday fired in back-to-back aces to make things close at 17-13 but from there the Heat were able to close out the match and walk away with a 25-19 win.
  • TRU played their best volleyball of the night in the third set. The 'Pack hit .433 per cent as a team and Ibbetson, Walker Sodaro and Annala all fired in aces as the 'Pack won in dominant fashion by a score of 25-15.
  • The Heat refused to let the 'Pack back in the game however and closed out the match with a 25-18 fourth set.

NOTABLE
  • Over $5000 was raised for the Owyn McInnis Memorial – Men's Volleyball Award through donations at the game.
  • The WolfPack had six aces to UBCO's three.
  • UBCO moves to 3-0 with the win while the 'Pack fall to 1-2.
