Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack storm back to beat the Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • After dropping the first set, the TRU WolfPack men's volleyball team caught fire the rest of the way to defeat the UBC Okanagan Heat by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 30-28, 25-19, 25-18) inside the TCC Saturday evening.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Matthew Hamilton was outstanding for the 'Pack, racking up 17 kills while hitting .389 per cent. Rylan Ibbetson added 13 kills and a pair of aces while rookie middle Lincoln Wagner had five kills, three aces and six total blocks.
  • Seba Manuel was again key for the Heat with 13 kills in the contest. Jack Taylor added 12 of his own and Zach van Geel finished with 38 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBCO took a close first set. Taylor led the way for the visitors with a perfect five kills on five attacks. Hamilton responded with five of his own but seven serving errors from the 'Pack doomed the home team in a tight 25-22 affair.
  • The WolfPack won a marathon second set. Another five kills from Hamilton set the tone as the 'Pack took a 23-21 edge after a massive rally that featured every player on the court touching the ball. The Heat battled back to hold the first set point of the game at 25-24 but a massive swing from Hamilton kept the 'Pack in it. With the teams going back-and-forth Rylan Ibbetson ended the set with back-to-back kills as TRU took it 30-28.
  • Service aces were the story of the third set as the 'Pack fired in five in the frame. The 'Pack jumped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a strong serving run from Lincoln Wagner that featured three aces. TRU was able to ride that momentum all the way to 24-16 where a dump from setter Tyson Koop gave the 'Pack set point at 24-16. The Heat were able to fend off three set points but couldn't pull off the impossible as Flowerday ended the set with a massive kill.
  • TRU ran away with a dominant showing in the fourth and final set. Wagner had back-to-back blocks to run the score up to 21-14 in favour of the 'Pack before Ibbetson put the game away with a big swing.
NOTABLE
  • The win moves TRU to 2-2 while for the Heat, the loss was their first of the season as they sit at 3-1.
  • The WolfPack had ten aces to UBCO's five.
  • Tyson Koops 28 assists were his most in his young WolfPack career.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • We just kept mixing guys in and a lot of the changes were about having a positive attitude because we were struggling. Last night was probably the worst volleyball we've played this year including the preseason.
  • It was great to see Lincoln Wagner really coming into his own, he was serving, blocking and attacking well and that's what we needed.
  • On overcoming early serve troubles We were just worried about it early, and it's like anything if you're worried about the outcome you are going to be in trouble. We know how to serve so it was just about getting back into the pocket.
  • On having Riley Brinnen and Owen Waterhouse on the bench It's like we talked about at the memorial, this team wasn't going to be complete until they were back. It means a lot to everyone and it was just great to see. Owen Waterhouse's parents asked if he could sit on the bench and I replied that I'd be mad if he wasn't, it gives me someone to talk to.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have a bye weekend ahead of them next weekend before they hit the road to play the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford Nov. 15-16.
