Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Witkowski propels ‘Pack to sweep of Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • Make it four-straight wins to start the season for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team that earned a dominant 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday night in the TCC.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Middle Addiston Witkowski was the story of the night offensively for TRU. The third-year from Medicine Hat, AB recorded 11 kills as well as a service ace and five block assists. Rida Erlalelitepe added nine kills and Brooklyn Olfert chipped in with six.
  • Amay Perry led the Heat with 11 kills while Olivia Boulding added seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Four kills from Witkowski in the first set gave TRU the early lead. The 'Pack came out of the gates hot and a strong serving run from Kate Lamothe that featured a pair of aces gave the hosts a commanding 21-11 lead. Perry and Boulding both had four kills for UBCO and the Heat tried to mount a comeback late, but that effort fell short as TRU took it 25-19.
  • Blocks were the story of the second, as the two teams combined for 19 in the set. UBCO jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but the 'Pack fought their way back into the match and pulled even thanks to a block from Witkowski and Hadley Schmidt that tied the match at 13-13. Things remained tied all the way to 21-21 before the 'Pack took control of the set. Finishing on a 4-1 run that featured a block and kill from Witkowski as well as an ace from Schmidt allowed the 'Pack to take the second by the score of 25-21.
  • TRU closed things out in an incredibly close third set. A big swing from Kamloops local Hailey Ward gave TRU a 22-20 edge but UBCO refused to go away quietly. The Heat tied the match at 22-22 before a kill from Witkowski and two-straight courtesy of Erlalelitepe gave the 'Pack the win.

NOTABLE
  • 11 kills is a new career high for Witkwoski.
  • This is the second time in program history that TRU has started a Canada West season with four wins, with the first coming in 2019-20. The 'Pack have never been 5-0 in Canada West play.
  • TRU is ranked No. 9 in the country.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • We were struggling to score from the left side position, which is the exact opposite from our first weekend of the season, and some of that is that UBCO serves tough and puts up a big block. I thought we found a way to get around that, Addison Witkowski had a big night offensively for us and that kind of makes up for some of the struggles we were having to score points.
  • Anytime you get a win it's good, a win is a win, it wasn't always as pretty as it can be but at the end of the day we found a way to scrap it out against a tough UBCO team.
  • On the play of Witkowski  I thought today she did a good job of getting some depth off the net and just being available. If you're available in transition – especially with the strong left sides we have that force the block to release that way – if you can just be available, you should have pretty good shot at scoring points and I thought she did a great job of that today.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have a bye weekend ahead of them before they hit the road to take on the UFV Cascades in Abottsford, Nov. 15-16.
