WolfPack complete historic sweep of Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  • For the first time in program history the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the TWU Spartans with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 27-25) victory inside the TCC Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rida Erlalelitepe had a game-high 17 kills for the 'Pack while also recording 11 digs and a pair of service aces. Brooklyn Olfert added a further ten kills and recorded four block assists. Hadley Schmidt and Libby Meldrum split the setting duties with Schmidt recording 32 assists and Meldrum 17.
  • Maryn Boldon and Kaylee Plouffe spearheaded the Spartans' offence with 13 and 12 kills respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Erlalelitepe led the way with a dominant serving run in the first set as the 'Pack secured nine-straight points en route to a dominant 25-15 set victory.
  • The second frame was point-for-point. The 'Pack found themselves down by five before back-to-back aces courtesy of Kate Lamothe brought them right back into the set. The Spartans found an answer late and big kills from Boldon and Faith Murray allowed them to secure the 25-22 set victory.
  • Lamothe was on fire early in the third set with a pair of kills and block assists. Erlalelitepe and Maria Dancheva sparked a 5-0 TRU run that gave the 'Pack a 17-12 edge and the hosts never looked back with Olfert ending the frame with a kill to give TRU the 25-19 win.
  • A massive comeback effort in the fourth set secured victory of the 'Pack. TWU jumped all the way out 20-12 before the WolfPack responded. An 8-0 TRU run kick started by a pair of kills from Erlalelitepe and two blocks from Faith Christensen brought the 'Pack right back into the set. From there the teams traded points until a kill from Dancheva and an ace from Schmidt gave the 'Pack the set and match victory.

NOTABLE
  • The win secured TRU's first-ever weekend sweep of the perennial powerhouse Spartans.
  • The WolfPack entered the weekend 2-36 against TWU in conference play, they are now 4-36.
  • After the win tonight, Thompson Rivers – who is ranked No. 5 in Canada, moves to 6-2 while Trinity Western drops to 5-5.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • We played well enough, when we were disciplined and played within our system we controlled the match. We had some lapses but it was good that even though we dug ourselves some holes we were able to pull ourselves out of the grave and get the job done.
  • I thought Rida was solid, she was calm – passed the ball well – she just gives us a lot of confidence. Brooklyn wasn't as efficient tonight but she passed the ball better. I thought Kate came in and did a good job. In closing time I thought Faith made an impact as well so I thought it was a good team effort.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will finish their first semester of play next weekend when they head to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies Nov. 29-30.
