Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack earn large lead but can’t hold off Timberwolves

QUICK FIRE
  • They led by as many as 13 points but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team couldn't secure victory in 61-51 defeat at the hands of the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Danijela Kovacevic led TRU with 13 points while also recording six assists and three steals. Olivia Randall knocked down a trio of three-pointers for 11 points while rookie Morgan Eichenberger had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her young career.
  • Viktoriia Filatova tallied a game-high 20 points with Sveta Boykova adding 15 more as well as 12 rebounds for host team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was one where both teams had their turn dominating the run of play. After UNBC jumped out to an early 16-7 lead, the WolfPack came storming back. TRU ended the frame on a 12-3 run keyed by five points from Priyanca Sundher. The fourth-year guard from Surrey put an exclamation point on the opening ten minutes by making a jumper with just two seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 19-19.
  • The WolfPack kept that momentum going to start the second quarter as they went on a 10-0 run through the opening five minutes thanks in part to four points from Eichenberger. TRU held the Timberwolves to just one field goal in the quarter as the 'Pack took a 35-26 lead into the halftime break.
  • It was all TRU early in the third quarter before the Timberwolves embarked upon a monumental comeback. Rookie Allison Hansen gave TRU their biggest lead of the night by a tally of 42-29 with six minutes left in the third quarter but from there on out it was all UNBC. The hosts finished the frame on an 18-1 run that featured nine points from Filatova to take a 47-43 lead with ten minutes left to play.
  • UNBC stretched that lead by scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter. Randall knocked down a three to cut the lead to 56-50 but that was as close as TRU would come as UNBC held on to win the game.
NOTABLE
  • TRU had 24 points from players on their bench compared to UNBC's 12.
  • A strong WolfPack effort saw them hold the lead for over 42 per cent of the game.
