Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Heroic WolfPack effort not enough in marathon loss to Huskies

QUICK FIRE
  • On an emotional anniversary the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team fought until the very last point before falling by a narrow 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10) margin to the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday, last season's kills leader for all of U SPORTS, led the 'Pack with 22 kills. The product of Proserpine, AUS hit .405 per cent and also recorded a pair of solo blocks. Dylan Annala added 10 kills and Matthew Hamilton eight, while Walker Sodaro recorded 44 assists.
  • Both Jefferson Morrow and Emmett Graham paced the hometown Huskies with 15 kills apiece. Noah Opseth had 45 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An incredibly close set went the way of the Huskies. Annala, in a return to his home province, had four kills to lead the 'Pack. Saskatchewan held a slim two or three point lead for much of the set before the WolfPack fought off a pair of set points through kills from Annala and Flowerday to tie the frame at 24-24. That was as close as the 'Pack would come however, as the Huskies responded to take the first 26-24.
  • TRU responded in the second. The 'Pack hit .250 per cent as a team while holding Saskatchewan to .071 per cent en route to the 25-20 victory. Flowerday had six kills in the set to pace the WolfPack.
  • Once again Saskatchewan eked out victory in the third. After the WolfPack jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, the Huskies were able to tie the match back up at 21-21 led by Jacob Baird's three kills. From there the Huskies clutched up to take the set 25-23.
  • The WolfPack refused to go away and fought back in the fourth. Flowerday was dominant with eight kills in the set. TRU surged forward after the teams were tied at 21-21 with Flowerday recording a kill and then a block assisted by Mason Sodaro and Hamilton to give the 'Pack a two-point edge. From there, a Hamilton kill and Flowerday ace ended the set with TRU winning 25-22.
  • Unfortunately for fans of the 'Pack, the fifth set belonged to the Huskies. Saskatchewan hit .636 per cent as a team and jumped out to a 9-5 lead that they wouldn't surrender to take the set and match.
NOTABLE
  • Before the game there was a 15 second moment of silence recognizing the one year anniversary of the tragic car crash that took the life of Owyn McInnis while causing Riley Brinnen and Owen Waterhouse to sustain life-altering injuries.
  • Flowerday's 22 kills move him to 983 on his CW career. He is just 17 kills away from becoming the second player in program history and 29th in conference history to break the 1,000 kill mark.
UP NEXT
  • These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in Saskatoon in a game that gets underway at 2:30 p.m. PT.
