Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Impressive effort sees WolfPack right with No. 4 UBC at half before fading late

QUICK FIRE
  • They went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the nation for 20 minutes but in the end a young Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball squad was unable to stay with the UBC Thunderbirds in a 74 to 43 loss Saturday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Danijela Kovacevic once again led the way offensively for TRU as the product of Serbia finished the night with 14 points. Priyanca Sundher and Sydney Vollrath both added eight points while Morgan Eichenberger snagged 10 rebounds to go along with two assists and three steals.
  • Sofia Bergman was the high scorer for UBC with 16 points. Jessica Clarke added 13 points and Olivia Weekes 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU went to-to-toe with the T-Birds early. Vollrath and Sundher scored the first two buckets of the game to give the home team an early 5-0 edge. The trio of Vollrath, Sunder and Randall all scored five points in the opening frame as the 'Pack knocked down seven free throws while keeping the T-Birds offence in check to see the score just 19-15 in favour of UBC after ten minutes of play.
  • The WolfPack kept that pace going into the second quarter. Tough team defence and timely scoring saw the 'Pack stay right with UBC. A pair of Kamloops locals provided some big buckets for TRU in the frame. A three-pointer from Jocelyn Orr with just over three minutes left in the half cut the T-Birds lead to just 26-22 while Jaya Saroya finished off a strong and-one play with 18 seconds left as the UBC lead was just 32-27 through 20 minutes of play.
  • The Thunderbirds blew the game wide open in the third quarter. UBC shot 45 per cent from the floor as a team en route to 23 points and a 20-point advantage. Kovacevic countered the UBC attack with six points in the quarter, but it proved to be too little for the 'Pack to keep pace.
  • From there the Thunderbirds were able to see out the remainder of the game and claim the victory.
NOTABLE
  • UBC is ranked No. 4 in the nation.
  • The Thunderbirds are now 4-0 to start their season while the WolfPack drop to 0-4.
  • 69 per cent of the WolfPack's minutes in the game came from players in their first or second year of eligibility as a young TRU squad continues to build.

UP NEXT
  • Another home weekend is on the horizon for TRU as they prepare to host the UFV Cascades on Nov. 15-16.
