Men's Basketball TRU WolfPack

From California to Kamloops with Daniel Bost

KAMLOOPS – A basketball journey that has spanned borders will see a chapter come to a close this weekend when Daniel Bost suits up for the final home games of his WolfPack career in the TCC.

A 5-10 guard originally from Seaside, CA Bost has been with the 'Pack since 2021 and is putting the finishing touches on a TRU career that has him firmly inside the top 20 in multiple different categories in the program's career record books.

After playing two years of basketball close to home with Hartnell College in nearby Salinas, CA – where he averaged 15.5 points-per-game – Bost bet big on himself with the decision to come to Kamloops.

Looking for options to continue playing basketball and further his education, Bost was scrolling through another school's roster when he noticed they were playing the University of Calgary Dinos – a school he didn't recognize.

"I had no idea what that was and just ended up looking at the different schools in Canada West and I was so confused because I had no idea basketball was being played in Canada. It's an American thing really, to be ignorant to what is going on outside of our borders," explains Bost with a laugh.

Bost then got in contact with multiple coaches across the conference before him and former WolfPack head coach Scott Clark quickly built a connection.

"I got a lot of positive feedback but me and Coach Clark hit it off instantly," said Bost. "I felt like he was very trustworthy, very honest. He didn't guarantee me anything other than having the opportunity to come out and play."

After doing more research on TRU, including speaking with former WolfPack player and Canada West All-Star Ta'Quan Zimmerman, Bost made the decision to leave behind everything and everyone he knew to chase his dream.

"Just life experience and the opportunity," said Bost on what helped him make the decision to join the 'Pack. "It's not too often that you get the chance to go do what you love in another country."

Arriving during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bost received the first bit of culture shock in his new country when he went outside after a 14-day quarantine period.

"I don't even know if it was -5 but I was just in pain. I almost teared up one day because my body just couldn't comprehend that level of cold. I was walking from East Village to Superstore, and I just couldn't do it, I just had to go back home," said Bost "Now I can walk around in -10, -20 and it's cold, but I'll be fine."

It isn't just the temperature that Bost has quickly acclimated to, as he has found himself become an integral part of the Kamloops basketball community both on and off the court.

For TRU Bost has suited up in 54 career Canada West games and will end his career with his name written throughout the WolfPack record books. Bost is 10th all-time with 92 three-point field goals made, sixth in career free-throw percentage (82.1) and 20th in career points (541) despite playing for just three seasons.

Off the court, Bost has become a fan favourite for youth basketball players in Kamloops through his work coaching with Kamloops Hoops.

"Meeting all the kids has been great, they really love it when the university athletes go help them out and they come to the games and make a lot of noise," said Bost. "Being in the basketball scene here with the young kids is really great. It's just nice to give back to them."

Graduating with a business administration degree this June, Bost has options to both play basketball and continue his education ahead of him.

"That's a process I'm still figuring out. I plan on being here in the summer for a little bit, I've been accepted to a Master's program in Bournemouth, UK and there's an opportunity to play basketball out there so there's some options ahead of me," said Bost. "I want to try and pursue professional basketball a little bit before I get into my field of work but I kind of want to take a break and enjoy my time a little bit."

As this chapter of his life in Kamloops begins to come to a close, Bost will leave a legacy of determination and hard work from his time with the 'Pack.

"Whatever you want in life you just have to work at it, I wasn't the most talented or biggest guy but I've always just worked at it. Progress won't be linear but if you keep working through the highs and the lows eventually, you'll get to where you want to be."

Bost and his teammates play their final home games of the 2023-24 season this Friday and Saturday inside the TCC with both games scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
