Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Big fourth frame powers Cougars over ‘Pack

QUICK FIRE
  • KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team went on a run in the third quarter to make things close before fading in the fourth en route to an 80-46 defeat at the hands of the Mount Royal Cougars inside the TCC.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Sydney Vollrath led the way offensively for TRU as she knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to 11 points. Graduating guard Kelsey Cruz, playing in the final home weekend of her WolfPack career, added nine points for the 'Pack with Danijela Kovacevic recording a further nine.
  • Both Harriette Mackenzie and Nora Luca scored 16 points for MRU. Jenika Martens and Tanis Metcalfe rounded out the double-digit scorers for the visitors with 15 and 10 points respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors grabbed hold of the game early and jumped out to a 5-0 lead before a Cruz layup and a Kovacevic three-pointer brought TRU right back into it. The Cougars controlled the latter portion of the opening frame however and a 12-4 MRU run to end the first gave the visitors a 19-9 lead after ten minutes of play.
  • A trio of three-pointers saw the 'Pack keep pace with MRU in the second quarter. Two from Tia Rowell and one from Vollrath played a key role in the TRU offence as they trailed by 14 at the half.
  • TRU's best basketball of the night came in the third quarter. Eight points from Vollrath helped TRU outscore 19-18 in the quarter and cut the lead down to as low as ten at times.
  • Unfortunately for TRU the comeback wasn't meant to be as the Cougars dominated the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

NOTABLE
  • Cruz will be honoured at the end of the game tomorrow night as she graduates from the program.
  • Vollrath's trio of three-pointers in the game were the most she's scored in a game

UP NEXT
  • These two teams will be back in action tomorrow night - Saturday, February 10 - inside the TCC for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
