Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack strike first through Kang but can’t hold off T-Birds

QUICK FIRE
  • Minwoo Kang scored the first goal of his WolfPack career but the Thompson Rivers University men's soccer team was unable to shut down the UBC Thunderbirds in a 3-1 loss Saturday night in Vancouver.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kang, a first-year midfielder from Seoul, South Korea, tallied the first goal of the season for TRU and the first of his Canada West career. Kamloops local Dominico Comita provided the assist on Kang's goal.
  • Max Comsia tallied twice for UBC while Henri Godbout added the other.
  • TRU goalkeeper Luca Ortu made seven saves in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Creating a flurry of goal-scoring chances in the first half, TRU was rewarded for their efforts 30 minutes into the game. Midfielder Marcus D'Andrea put on a burst of speed to create enough room to send a ball into the box that fell perfectly onto the foot of Comita. From there Comita was able to send it back across the face of goal into the path of Kang for the tap-in tally.
  • Not satisfied with the 1-0 lead, TRU continued to push throughout the rest of the first half but just missed doubling their lead on a couple of occasions.
  • The field shifted in a second half that saw UBC tally three times and fire 12 shots towards Ortu in the TRU net.
  • After tying the game through Comsia just five minutes into the second half, UBC took the lead in the 68th minute thanks to a header from Godbout before Comsia provided the insurance marker with five minutes left to play.

NOTABLE
  • Both Kang (with the goal) and Comita (with the assist) recorded the first points in Canada West play of their WolfPack careers.
  • UBC was picked to finish first in the Canada West pre-season coaches poll.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, John Antulov)
  • We were going up against one of the top teams in Canada and I thought we were excellent, we made some big strides. We knew they were going to come out hard in the second half and we knew it would be critical to try and keep them off the scoresheet for the first 10-15 minutes atleast - and that didn't happen - but then I thought we responded really well.
  • The second and third goals were just mistakes on our part and when you're playing good teams they are going to punish the mistakes that you make.
  • I thought we made some real strides this weekend and we learned a lot about our group.
  • There were seven or eight first year guys that have come in and have shown that they've already made strides which bodes well for our future.
  • It was great getting a good chunk of minutes in for so many of our players.
  • I don't think the results tell the tale of how the group played, we just need to clean some things up and I think we'll continue to grow as the season goes.
UP NEXT
  • TRU will make a highly-anticipated return to Hillside next weekend as they are set to play their first home games of the season on Friday and Saturday night. Both games will kick off at 7 p.m.
