Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Coulibaly to Will connection fires WolfPack to victory

QUICK FIRE
  • Lachlan Will fired home a pair of second half goals to lead the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the TWU Spartans Friday night at Hillside Stadium.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Will, a first-year forward from Vancouver, tallied the first two goals of his WolfPack career with Abdel Coulibaly playing provider on both goals.
  • Jordan Low scored the lone goal of the game for TWU with an assist from Thomas Powell.
  • TRU goalkeeper Luca Ortu earned the first win of his WolfPack career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity Western opened the scoring with a marker in the 24th minute. Low took a feed from Powell far away from net before turning and driving at the WolfPack defence to create enough space to fire a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
  • The WolfPack rallied to dominate the second half.
  • In the 65th minute Mikkel Rosenlund sent a ball forward into the path of Coulibaly (who entered the match just moments before as a substitute) the product of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, put forth a great ball into the path of Will who made no mistake to score the first of his TRU career.
  • That same connection proved fruitful in the 78th minute. Coulibaly took off on a powerful run before spotting an open Will on the edge of the box. Will received the pass with his right foot before burying the ball into the back of the net with his left.
  • The WolfPack were able to see out the remainder of the game thanks to a solid defence en route to picking up their first win of the season.

NOTABLE
  • All five wins that TRU holds over Trinity Western in CW regular season play have come at Hillside Stadium. They are 5-4-2 at home and 0-8-1 away against the Spartans.
  • Coulibaly made his WolfPack debut tonight and now boasts two assists in just 26 minutes of play for TRU.
  • TRU moves to 1-2-0 on the season while the match was the first of 2024 for the Spartans.

QUOTABLE (TRU forward, Lachlan Will)
  • I'm happy, it was a great way to start the season at home. Was a tough fight but I'm really happy for the team and how we responded in the second half.
  • I think it was a mixture of a couple things in the second half, as a team we just raised our level. We had a really good spell at the end of the first half but just couldn't score. In the second half we were able to finish and some players came off the bench to make a really good impact.
  • It's a little bit of weight off the shoulders to score, I'm happy to get going and open the goal-scoring account with TRU and I'm looking forward to growing with the team.
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will look to make it two-for-two from their homestand tomorrow night when they welcome the UFV Cascades to Hillside Stadium for a 7 p.m. kick off. All members of KYSA, Soccer Quest, TOFC and Rivers FC can enter the game for free.
