Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Cascades hold off ‘Pack in feisty affair

QUICK FIRE
  • Neither team finished with a complete complement of 11 players on the pitch as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team battled hard in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the UFV Cascades Saturday night at Hillside.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Harjoven Sidhu and Riku Suga both scored their first goals of the season for UFV.
  • TRU goalkeeper Luca Ortu made five saves in the contest including numerous vital saves early in the game.
  • Jackson Cowx in the UFV net earned the shutout with a strong performance that featured four saves of his own..

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fraser Valley opened the scoring just four minutes into the game. Sidhu jumped all over a loose turnover from the TRU defence before walking in on goal and calmly tucking the ball into the back of the net.
  • After a slow start during which Ortu had to make a pair of strong saves for TRU, the hosts rebounded to dominate the rest of the first half.
  • Abdel Coulibaly, Lachlan Will and Minwoo Kang all had clear-cut scoring opportunities for TRU to level the score but Cowx was spectacular in the UFV net, making save after save for the Cascades.
  • Already clinging to their one goal lead, the Cascades' job got even harder in the 40th minute when Sidhu received a red card leaving the visitors with just ten men on the field.
  • Up a man, the WolfPack pushed for the equalizer and had their best chance to tie in the 50th minute when Ranjeet Brar setup Tommy Moon with a great opportunity inside the 18-yard box only for Cowx to make an acrobatic diving stop.
  • Suga was able to score the insurance marker for UFV in the 87th minute on a counter-attack after a red card handed to the WolfPack had evened the teams at ten men apiece.
  • From there an intense contest came to a finish with multiple yellows and another red card handed out.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 1-3-0 on the season while the Cascades remain undefeated at 3-0-1.
  • Fraser Valley's win was just their second in the last seven games they have played in Kamloops.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have their bye week up next as they get the chance to regroup and prepare for another home game on Friday, September 13 when they welcome the MacEwan Griffins to Hillside.
