Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Last gasp effort from WolfPack comes up just shy

QUICK FIRE
  • Hitting a post on the final kick of the game denied the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team a share of the points in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the MacEwan Griffins.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jonathan Rinaldi opened the scoring for the 'Pack while Ryan Olak tallied the first goal of his TRU career.
  • Rakan Yassin was electric for the visitors, playing a hand in all three of the Griffin's markers with two goals and an assist.
  • Abhiroop Sandhu provided the other tally for MacEwan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack struck first in just the seventh minute of action. Slick passing between Rinaldi and Minwoo Kang allowed Rinaldi to drive into the box where he was hauled down by a Griffins defender. From there Rinaldi made no mistake from the penalty spot to bury the ball and give TRU the lead.
  • Both teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the first half, but Luca Ortu in the TRU net and Oleksandr Popravka for MacEwan both shut the door to keep the score 1-0.
  • The Griffins tied the match up in the 52nd minute with a penalty of their own. Kayden Dugas slid through the TRU defence to force a WolfPack defender into a foul. The resulting whistle allowed Yassin to convert from the penalty spot.
  • MacEwan took the lead just ten minutes later. Dugas found Yassin in the middle of the field and from there the MacEwan forward powered a shot from 25 yards out that skipped into the back of the net.
  • After the Griffins captured an all-important insurance marker in the 86th minute, the WolfPack did everything they could to equalize.
  • Olak scored off a goalmouth scramble in extra time but a header from Dos Santos was pawed off the line by Popravka to allow the visitors to escape with the victory.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 1-4-0 on the season while the Griffins pick up their first win of the year and are now 1-3-1.
  • Olak's marker was the first of his WolfPack career.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back in action tomorrow night when they take on the MRU Cougars at 7 p.m. inside Hillside Stadium.
