Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack storm back to defeat Timberwolves

QUICK FIRE
  • A pair of second half goals powered the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to victory on the road Friday, as they downed the UNBC Timberwolves 2-1.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Sophia Branby opened her WolfPack account with an important goal to start the second half. Berea Woldeyes played hero with a game-winning effort from long range. Captain Ainsley Grether and Bridget Baird both recorded assists.
  • Kate Rattee opened the scoring for the Timberwolves while Lauren Gubbels made seven saves in the losing effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite TRU outshooting UNBC 10-2 in the first half, it was the visitors that led through 45 minutes of play. The home side grabbed early momentum in the 12th minute when Rattee rose up to head home a cross and snag the lead.
  • Making four substitutions at the half, the WolfPack found the equalizer not long into the second frame. A corner kick in the 53rd minute bounced around the 18-yard box before eventually Branby beat a pair of defenders to tuck the ball into the open net.
  • A moment of brilliance from Woldeyes with just 12 minutes left to play gave TRU the victory. The second-year midfielder struck a ball from 35 yards out that sailed perfectly over an outstretched Gubbels and into the top corner of the net.

NOTABLE
  • The win was the second in a row for a TRU team that is now 2-2 on the season. UNBC meanwhile, drops to 0-3.
  • The WolfPack outshot the Timberwolves 18-3 in the contest.
  • The win was TRU's fourth in a row against UNBC.
  • Grether now has 13 points in her WolfPack career, good enough for second in the program's Canada West history books.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • First thing you have to give them a lot of credit, I thought UNBC made things really difficult for us and tactically did some things that stretched us and caused us some problems. They matched us all across the park and were good value to go a goal up.
  • We found ourselves a goal down at halftime which is not where we wanted to be, but the girls showed some real grit and belief to get back into that game and find a way to go and win it.
  • I was really happy with Sophia, we gave her the MVP. For her to get her first goal and to do it early in the second half really kicked us on. She's such a smooth player on the ball and I can't say enough good things about what I think her U SPORTS career could look like.
  • The mindset of everyone was great. Everybody that came out of the game was super supportive, everyone that came into the game gave us really valuable minutes.
  • On another day I think we make it more comfortable, but credit to UNBC who kept digging in and fighting. I think it's the sign of a good team that you can still manage to find a result when maybe you don't play your best..

UP NEXT
  • TRU will remain on the road and get set to travel to Vancouver where they will face the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday at 1 p.m.
