Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Defence, De Amaral stymie No. 1 T-Birds in close loss

QUICK FIRE
  • A complete team defensive effort allowed the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to come close to snagging a point in a 1-0 loss to the reigning national champion UBC Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU's best chance to score came early in the game when Esi Lufo played a ball into the path of Ainsley Grether. Grether's effort from just inside the 18-yard box skidded just wide of the net.
  • UBC scored the only goal of the day in the 29th minute of play. Thompson burst in all alone on the WolfPack goal and while De Amaral was able to make the first save but the rebound fell right back to Thompson for the goal.

NOTABLE
  • TRU team that is now 2-3 on the season while UBC is off to a perfect 4-0 start.
  • TRU is the first team to hold UBC to less than three goals so far this year.
  • De Amaral's nine saves are the second most in a single game in her TRU career.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • I thought for the most part we gave a good account of ourselves against the defending national champions. We defended well and I think we showed that for long stretches of this game we can run with a really good team.
  • There's a lot of positives we can take. I thought the commitment and energy from everyone was outstanding. We didn't do enough to threaten their goal, but we hung in there and then it's about trying to create something or get a bit of luck.
  •  I thought Alexis Virgo did an outstanding job, Bella Geremia played really well and Cassandra De Amaral made some big saves. The defensive battle from everybody was really good.
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will head back to Kamloops next weekend where they will welcome the UVic Vikes (Friday night at 5:30 p.m.) and the MRU Cougars (Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.) to Hillside Stadium.
