Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Lufo heads ‘Pack to deserved draw with UVic

QUICK FIRE
  • A clutch second half comeback powered the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to a well-earned 1-1 tie with the UVic Vikes inside Hillside Stadium Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Forward Esi Lufo scored her first goal of the year for TRU. Bella Geremia added the assist while Cassandra De Amaral made four stops in the WolfPack net.
  • Sophie Murphy was the goalscorer for UVic with Sophie Fingarson tallying the helper.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half ended scoreless despite both teams earning a couple dangerous scoring chances.
  • UVic's best came in the fourth moment of play when Brianne McLeish stripped a WolfPack defender of the ball right on the edge of the 18-yard box, from there McLeish unleashed a shot that De Amaral was able to steer wide of the net.
  • The WolfPack nearly opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Lufo threaded the needle with a pass that sprang Juli La Rotta in on goal, La Rotta cut the ball onto her right foot and appeared primed to send the ball into the back of the net before brave defending from a UVic defender blocked the shot.
  • The Vikes opened the scoring just minutes after the halftime whistle. Fingarson found Murphy on the edge of the 18-yard box where the defender was able to power a left-footed effort into the top corner.
  • After threatening the UVic net a couple times, TRU found the equalizer through Lufo just over ten minutes later. Geremia whipped in a corner kick and Lufo was able to rise the highest in the six-yard box to power the ball into the back of the net.

NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 2-3-1on the season while the Vikes are 3-1-2.
  • With the goal Lufo moves into a tie for fourth for the most points in the program's CW history with nine.
  • The result was TRU's first-ever tie with UVic. After starting their tenure in CW 0-10 against the Vikes, the 'Pack are 1-1-1 in their last three meetings.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • They're a good team, this might be one of the first times we've taken a result off them as a program. I thought we started a bit slow and they were really strong early.
  • Credit to the girls, they bounced back and barring a bounce or some luck around the goal I thought we might have done enough to win it.
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back at home tomorrow night as they welcome the MRU Cougars to Hillside at 7:00 p.m.
