Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack throw everything at net late but can’t pull even with Cougars

QUICK FIRE
  • Two goals from the visitors sunk the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team as they fell 2-0 to the MRU Cougars Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • TRU fired four shots on goal in the game but couldn't find a way past first-year goalkeeper Ella Filek.
  • Tamara Djurisic was the story for Mount Royal, finishing the game with a goal and an assist. Marita Leimbach provided the other tally for the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While the WolfPack controlled most of the ball in the first half, it was the Cougars who led through the first 45 minutes of play.
  • The Cougars took the lead in the 25th minute of play. Makoloski took a quick corner to Djurisic at the edge of the box and the midfielder was able to sail the ball into the top portion of the net.
  • Coming out in attack to start the second half, the 'Pack came close to equalizing just ten minutes into the second frame. Bella Geremia sent in a corner kick that bounced around the six-yard box before Esi Lufo attempted an acrobatic bicyle kick attempt that ended up just wide of the frame.
  • The Cougars doubled their lead with just under 30 minutes left to play. Again it was from a corner kick as this time Djurisic played provider by whipping a ball into the near post that Leimbach was able to turn into the back of the net.
  • TRU's best chance to score in the game came in the 70th minute. Paige Dwane went on an overlapping run before sending in a cross that fell perfectly to Kat Stewart but her thunderous strike smashed off the crossbar and away from danger.
  • The WolfPack continued to push for a goal throughout the rest of the game but couldn't find a way to get the ball past Filek.

NOTABLE
  • Both teams move to 2-4-1 on the season with the result.
  • The game was the first time that MRU has defeated TRU since 2018-19. The 'Pack still hold a 4-2 edge over the Cougars in the two school's Canada West history.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will continue their homestand next weekend as they get ready to welcome the UBC Thunderbirds (Friday, 5:00 p.m.) and the UNBC Timberwolves (Saturday, 5:00 p.m.) to Hillside Stadium.
