Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

No. 1 Thunderbirds take down WolfPack

QUICK FIRE
  • Two goals just over ten minutes apart in the first half was the difference as the visiting UBC Thunderbirds secured a 3-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • TRU fired four shots on goal in the game but couldn't find a way past either Dakota Beckett or Lita Billman who split goalkeeping duties for UBC.
  • Jade Taylor-Ryan was electric for the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals on the net as well as a number of other close chances. Ava Alexander provided the other goal while both Bailey Doerksen and Vanessa Tome finished the night with an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The highest-scoring offence in the conference struck first just before the 20 minute mark of the game. An in-direct free kick inside the WolfPack 18-yard box saw Doerksen slip a ball to Taylor-Ryan who got just enough of it to redirect the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Thunderbirds doubled that advantage ten minutes later. Nisa Reehal whipped a ball into the box that bounced off a couple legs before falling to Taylor-Ryan where the UBC forward made no mistake to score her second of the game.
  • The 'Pack weren't without threat themselves in the opening frame, as both Esi Lufo and Jessye Large secured shots on goal.
  • Kat Stewart finished with a couple shots on goal for TRU and the WolfPack defence did well to turn away multiple UBC attacks but the Thunderbirds put the game away for good with an Alexander header off of a corner kick.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 2-5-1 on the season with the result as they continue to fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division. UBC remains perfect on the season and are now 7-0 to start their Canada West campaign.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • For long periods, I thought we played quite well. Problem is, defensively again, just some issues, and we handed them a goal early on, a lack of focus at the back and that's something that we need to address. I thought we got at them for a bit in the second half and we were actually the better team for periods in the second half specifically. I thought we got at them. It's just disappointing. We've conceded, for us, some sloppy goals. Good to show we're right there, we just need to come out of the mistakes and then hopefully get something in and around the net, and get a little more quality in the attacking part of the field.
  • We always know it's going to be tough against (UBC). Not many teams beat them, they don't concede many goals, and we know that coming in. It was just one of those nights. The wind was a big factor early on in the game, and it made it difficult for both teams to get on board, but in the second half, some of our first-year players proved again that they can be successful at this level if they keep working hard. We'll take the positives, we'll dust off and we'll watch some game tape tonight and get ready for an important game tomorrow.
  • There'll be some recovery, some recoup stuff, and preparing for a very different type of game against some good opposition. We'll do some different things tactically. They'll be coming out with their guns blazing, so we've got to make sure we match their energy level and add a little bit of quality into that game.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will continue their homestand tomorrow night when they welcome the UNBC Timberwolves to Hillside Stadium for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off.
