Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Grether sets new program mark as WolfPack topple Timberwolves

QUICK FIRE
  • Captain Ainsley Grether provided the winning goal as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves inside Hillside Stadium.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Grether's goal was the tenth in her WolfPack career, setting the new program record for career goals in Canada West play. Kat Stewart provided the assist while Cassandra De Amaral made three saves for her second shutout of the season.
  • Brityn Hinsche had a strong night in the UNBC net with eight saves of her own. Both Kjera Hayman and Camryn Cline had attempts towards the WolfPack net for the visitors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The all-important goal came 17 minutes into the contest. Kat Stewart played a ball across the 18-yard box to Grether and although the fifth-year captain's first attempt was stopped by Hinsche she followed up with her own rebound to set WolfPack history.
  • The Timberwolves had their first chance of the game in the 28th minute when Kjera Hayman did well to create space but her shot sailed right to De Amaral.
  • A flurry of WolfPack chances early in the second frame went for nought as Hinsche came up with save after save to stop shots from Sophia Branby, Nathalie Burkett and Kat Stewart.
  • The Timberwolves refused to go away throughout the entire night though and came close to equalizing right at the end of the match. A pair of Timberwolves had swings at the ball inside the six-yard box on a goalmouth scramble but a combination of De Amaral and stout defending allowed the 'Pack to clear the ball away.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 3-5-1 on the season with the result as they continue to fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division. UNBC falls to 1-7.
  • Grether's goal moves her to ten career CW goals and into sole possession of first place in program history, just ahead of Marisa Mendonca (9) and Chantal Gammie (9).
  • The win was TRU's fifth in a row over the Timberwolves.
  • De Amaral moves into fourth in the program's record book for career shutouts.
  • The WolfPack outshot UNBC 9-3.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • I thought in the first half we were pretty dominant but credit to them, they are a very well organized team and caused us some problems tactically. In the second hald we stood tall, it required a really important last-ditch tackle at the end.
  • We had to make a couple changes and get some fresh legs in and  I thought the girls that came in did a really good job and again we saw some great performances from our rookies, which bodes well for our future.
  • It was a tough game, UNBC fought tooth and nail to make it really hard for us but we managed to see out the game. Maybe the only disappointment is that we didn't score a couple goals in the first half when we had a lot of the momentum but we'll take the three points.
  • On Ainsley Grether setting the new program record  That record is hers and she's earned it – it's great. Credit to her and the legacy she will leave behind and I'm happy for her.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will hit the road next weekend when they face the UFV Cascades and the TWU Spartans in the Lower Mainland.
