Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heartbreak on the road as ‘Pack fall on final kick of the game

QUICK FIRE
  • They went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the conference but the final kick of the game found its way into the back of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team's net in a 2-1 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Captain Elijah Dos Santos scored TRU's goal with a powerful header while Lucas Kirnon earned the assist. Making his second-consecutive start, Olivier Jumeau made four saves in the TRU net.
  • Caden Ruby and Rilind Idrizi scored for the Golden Bears with Idrizi's goal coming in the 96th minute of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A scoreless first half was highlighted by a WolfPack chance in the 32nd minute. Marcus D'Andrea whipped in a free kick that Dos Santos made contact with but was unable to direct towards net from in close.
  • That near-miss was a sign of things to come when Dos Santos did score just one minute into the second half. A corner kick off the foot of Kirnon was sent to the back post where Dos Santos beat a Golden Bears defender to power a header into the back of the net.
  • After valiant defending from the WolfPack backline and some strong saves from Jumeau, the Golden Bears were able to find the equalizer on a corner kick of their own with just 20 minutes left to play.
  • It looked like the 'Pack were on their way to securing a well-earned point on the road up until Idrizi stole victory in the very last moment.

NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 1-6-1 on the season.
  • TRU and the Golden Bears are an even 3-3 in CW play dating back to their first meeting in 2016.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, John Antulov)
  • I thought we were really good – the whole weekend, actually we were really good – we played the top two teams in the Prairie Division really tight.
  • Like I said to the guys 'obviously we are all upset, but it doesn't take away from the way we played this weekend.' At the end of the day we are just making critical mistakes at the worst times and it's hurting us right now.
  • The guys are buying in defensively. Trying to teach a whole new group defensive structure takes a little bit of time but I think if you look at this weekend, it was outstanding.
  • The group as a whole worked hard and defended well and then on top of that we did some good things moving forwards and in transition so overall we are seeing good strides, but we just aren't seeing it on the scoreboard right now.
  • We are starting to get there, we have half the season to go so like I said to the team 'we can still get something out of this, we just have to keep playing the way we've been playing and don't change what we are doing.'
UP NEXT
  • TRU will return home for a pair of games next weekend when they host the the UBC Thunderbirds (Friday, 7:30 p.m.) and the UVic Vikes (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.)
