Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack start second semester with sweep of Wesmen

QUICK FIRE
  • The nationally ranked Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team started the second semester of play right where they left off with a dominant 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-22) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert and Rida Erlalelitepe – who sit second and third in the conference in kills-per-set respectively – powered the offence for TRU with 13 and 12 kills apiece. Myah Cressy recorded four total blocks while Kate Lamothe fired in six aces.
  • Selva Planincic and Grace Vallis both had eight kills for a Wesmen team that was trying to pull off their second upset of a team ranked in the top five in Canada this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU needed to shake off some rust early as the first set was easily the closest of the night. The WolfPack needed to fight off a trio of set points before Erlalelitepe fired home a set-winning kill at 28-26. Erlalelitepe led the way with five kills for TRU while Maria Dancheva added three.
  • The WolfPack dominated the second set, hitting .293 per cent as a team while holding Winnipeg to a mark of just .045 per cent en route to the commanding 25-16 victory. Six different players for the 'Pack recorded a kill in the set.
  • Lamothe's wizardry from the service line was the difference in the third. The fourth-year outside hitter was at the line for a 9-0 WolfPack run during which she put in four service aces to give the 'Pack an 11-4 lead that they wouldn't surrender en route to the set and match victory.
NOTABLE
  • The win moves TRU to 9-2 on the season while Winnipeg drops to 5-6.
  • Lamothe's six aces were the most she's recorded in a single game in her WolfPack career.
  • Dating back to their final weekend of last semester, the WolfPack have now won nine-straight sets.
  • TRU entered the weekend ranked fifth in the nation.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "I don't think it was a pretty match for long stretches but we shook it off. We got better from the service line and more disciplined in our blocking defence. We started to find some more rhythm on offence too."
  • Winnipeg competes hard, they've had some big wins so I expect them to be tough tomorrow but overall I'm obviously happy with the win.
  • On the play of Lamothe "Like the rest of our team, Kate started a little not quite herself but one thing she can always do is serve tough, so I'm glad she found that - and obviously six aces in three sets is a pretty good mark.  She was a big reason we got some of those leads, she went on a couple runs that opened up a gap, so nice to see her go in and kind of find herself in the game and make a difference for us."

UP NEXT
  • These two teams will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 11, inside the TCC in a game scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m.
