Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack make it six in a row with marathon victory over Wesmen

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team went the distance with the Winnipeg Wesmen as TRU secured the 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-12, 18-25, 15-10) victory on home court.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • TRU was powered by a three-headed attack of Rida Erlalelitepe, Maria Dancheva and Brooklyn Olfert. Erlalelitepe recorded 16 kills while also adding both a pair of aces and solo blocks. Dancheva contributed 15 kills while Olfert racked up ten kills and four aces. Libby Meldrum handled setting duties and the product of North Vancouver had 32 assists.
  • Brooke Duncalfe led the Wesmen with 14 kills in the match. Grace Vallis had ten kills of her own to go along with two solo and three assisted blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU roared back from an early deficit to take the first. Trailing 18-12, the hosts ripped off a 9-1 run that featured four kills and a service ace from Erlalelitepe to lead 21-19. Winnipeg fought back but a kill from Olfert ended the frame with TRU taking it 25-23.
  • It was Winnipeg's turn to eke out a set victory in the second. TRU fought off a pair of set points but Emily Lavallee's fourth kill of the frame ended the second in favour of the visitors to the tune of 25-23.
  • The WolfPack dominated the third set, hitting .364 per cent as a team while holding Winnipeg to a mark of -.045. Erlalelitepe led the way with four kills as TRU pulled out the dominant 25-12 victory.
  • Winnipeg bounced back to take the fourth. After TRU jumped out to an early 6-1 edge, the Wesmen went on to score 14 of the next 19 points to take a 15-11 edge. From there Winnipeg was able to see out the set 25-18.
  • A resilient WolfPack side refused to go away in the fifth and final set. Trailing 5-2, TRU started to comeback buoyed by a kill and a block assist courtesy of Sasha Haldane. Down 9-8, the WolfPack came all the way back to win it 15-10 thanks in large part to three kills from Dancheva.
NOTABLE
  • The win was TRU's sixth-straight victory as they now hold a record of 10-2 and are temporarily in sole possession of second place in the conference although UFV does hold a pair of games in hand.
  • Dancheva's 15 kills were the most she's scored in a single game in her young WolfPack career.
  • TRU entered the weekend ranked fifth in the nation.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "We found a way. I thought Winnipeg played better to their credit, they served tougher and defended better."
  • "In the beginning we were going for stuff that maybe wasn't there and we weren't so good in our base defence, but when the chips were down we found a way - which is an important skill."
  • "We had a couple injuries this weekend but I thought Sasha Haldane did a great job on the double substitution for us. People came in and made plays – and sometimes it's not a lot of plays but it impacts a match greatly. Keira Gent had that a few times this weekend. Madison Maichin came in and hit a couple good serves, Faith Christensen came in and made a difference at the net for us, so I think we have good depth and they have proven that.
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack now have a bye weekend ahead of them before they hit the road to face the Alberta Pandas on Jan. 24-25.
