Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

WolPack battle hard in loss to Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  • After a valiant effort and dominant showing on the boards from the Thompson Rivers University Women's basketball team, the Trinity Western Spartans came up offensively to win the game 67-33 Thursday night in the Tournament Capital Centre.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Danijela Kovacevic led WolfPack scoring with 12 points. Rookie Morgan Eichenberger continued her torrid pace with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists. Kate De La Mare had eight rebounds of her own to go along with seven points. Olivia Randall also came in clutch with two big three-point buckets.
  • Shemaiah Abatayo led the Spartans with a game-high 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Colette Van der Hoven aided in the win with 12 points, six steals and four assists. Cassidy Buchanan came up big with nine points, six assists and four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 'Pack put up a good defensive effort in the first and maintained control of the boards with Eichenberger and De La Mare combining for six rebounds. Despite these efforts, the Spartans took a sizeable lead, ending the first quarter up 19-7 as seven different players scored for TWU in the quarter.
  • Both teams came out fired up in the second with Kovacevic and Abatayo going bucket-for-bucket to kick off the quarter. A substantial four-minute scoring drought for both teams was broken by a big three pointer from De La Mare, then followed up with an and-one from Eichenberger and a three from Randall to shrink the gap to six points at 26-20. Unfortunately for WolfPack fans, the Spartans found their rhythm to end the half with a 13-1 run to put them up by 18 at the half.
  • The Spartans put the clamps on the 'Pack offence in the third and Van der Hoven led the way with four points as they increased their lead to 55-26.
  • De La Mare came out in the fourth with some newfound energy to hit a couple quick buckets. However, the deficit was too much for the 'Pack to overcome and the Spartans took the win with a score of 67-33.

NOTABLE
  • The loss drops TRU to 0-13 and bumps TWU up to 7-5.
  • Eichenberger currently leads the nations rookies with 8.5 rebounds per game and is 10th in the overall rebound standings with 111 rebounds.
  • De La Mare is currently tied for ninth in the nation with 17 blocks.
