Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

WolfPack more than hold their own in loss to Vikes

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team played some of their best basketball of the season before the UVic Vikes pulled away in the second half to capture the 64-45 victory Saturday evening in the Tournament Capital Centre.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kamloops rookie Morgan Eichenberger was everywhere for the 'Pack, earning the second double-double of her TRU career. Not only was she a dominant force on the boards with 18 rebounds, showcasing her status as the leading rookie in the nation in rebounds, Eichenberger also drained 11 points. Priyanca Sundher led the WolfPack in scoring with 16 points, hitting a trio of threes from beyond the arc. Kate De La Mare tallied five rebounds and three clutch blocks.
  • The Vikes were led by their 6-5 centre Abigail Becker who recorded a double-double of her own with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Mimi Sigue also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tana Pankratz added 16 points for the Vikes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack came out quick in the first quarter, amassing a notable 12-4 lead early. Eichenberger had nine points and seven rebounds in the first quarter to lead the 'Pack. After a timeout from the Vikes, they came out fired up to retake the lead 19-16 in the first after a pair of threes from Pankratz and a couple clutch buckets from Sigue.
  • The Vikes were able to hold off the 'Pack in the second quarter, holding them to only 10 points. Kate De La Mare was a force on defence with a huge block halfway through the second. Becker and Sigue combined for nine of Victoria's points to maintain their lead 35-26 going into halftime.
  • The third quarter was slow going for both teams, with it being both teams lowest scoring quarter. All of TRU's points came from Sundher and Kylee Koppes in the quarter while the 'Pack put up two big blocks courtesy of Danijela Kovacevic and De La Mare. Abigail Becker recorded roughly half of the Vikes' points this quarter, making three buckets for six points.
  • The fourth quarter saw the WolfPack score six early points but TRU was unable to overcome the deficit as the Vikes pulled away, extending their lead to 19 points en route to taking the game 64-45.

NOTABLE
  • The loss will drop TRU to 0-14 and move UVIC up to 8-5
  • Morgan Eichenberger's 18 rebounds in a game are the most ever tallied by a rookie in WolfPack program history.
  • Sundher's 16 points ties a career high for the veteran sharp shooter.
  • De La Mare is now tied for 5th in U SPORTS rankings for blocks.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack remain at home next weekend to take on the UNBC Timberwolves inside the TCC. TRU will host UNBC at noon on Friday and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
