Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team will wrap up their 2024-25 home slate this weekend as they celebrate four graduating student-athletes.
Taking on the UNBC Timberwolves (1-11) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, the games will see the WolfPack (6-8) trying to cement their spot in the postseason picture.
A rare 5:30 tip-off for the team Friday night will see the 'Pack host Faculty and Staff appreciation night with free entry for TRU faculty and staff.
Saturday will see the 'Pack honour:
Denys Bachurin,
Simon Crossfield,
Asher Mayan and
Evan Smith as they play the final home games of their WolfPack career.
Originally from Ukraine, Bachurin joined the 'Pack in 2022 from North Platte Community College in Nebraska. The 6-7 forward has scored 666 points in 54 career regular season games and is top ten in program history in assists-per-game.
An ironman for the 'Pack, Crossfield has played in 79 regular season games since joining the program in 2019 – the eighth-most in program history. A force on both ends of the court, Crossfield has recorded 95 steals in his TRU career, ranking him fifth in program history.
Also with TRU for six years,
Asher Mayan will go down as one of the best players in WolfPack history. The product of Langley ranks sixth in the program record books with 868 career points while also slotting into the top ten in free throws, three-point field goals, assists, steals, minutes played and games started. Alongside his prowess on the court, Mayan was named the 2022 Dr. Roger H Barnsley WolfPack Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
From nearby Salmon Arm, Smith is a sharpshooter extraordinaire for the 'Pack. Joining TRU in 2021, Smith has suited up in 61 regular season games for TRU. The 6-3 guard will graduate in the Spring with a Bachelor's of Business Administration.
TRU battled hard in a pair of close losses last weekend. The 'Pack were right with the TWU Spartans for much of the night before fading late in an 87-78 defeat Friday. On Saturday TRU went toe-to-toe with the three-time defending CW Champion and U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UVic Vikes, leading in the final five minutes of play before eventually coming out on the wrong side of an 87-84 scoreline.
These teams met on the opening weekend of the season with the WolfPack pulling out an 88-85 overtime victory in Prince George.
3 Things
1: Between them the four graduating players have combined to play 5619 minutes for the 'Pack.
2: This weekend will be the final chance for basketball fans to catch the 'Pack inside the TCC. TRU finishes their schedule two-straight road weekends followed by a bye.
3: Papa Murphy's will be serving up pizza inside the TCC all season long.
By The Numbers
27: Second-year guard
Dami Farinloye set a new career-high with 27 points in the WolfPack's narrow loss to UVic.
3: All three of the most recent games that these teams have played against each other have been decided by six points or less, with two of those games going to overtime.
848: With 848 career points to his name,
Asher Mayan is close to becoming just the fifth player in program history to crack the 900 point mark.
