Seniors shine as WolfPack earn first win of the season

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team sent their seniors off in style Saturday night, earning their first win of the season in their final home contest of 2024-25 with a 73-61 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves inside the TCC.
 
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Playing in the final home games of their WolfPack careers, the seniors were the stars tonight as Priyanca Sundher and Danijela Kovacevic combined for an astounding 48 points, eight steals, five assists and five rebounds. Sunder shot 67% from beyond the arc to drown six three-pointers en route to 26 points. Kovacevic recorded 22 points, seven steals and five assists. Kylee Koppes added nine points to the scoresheet to go along with her critical momentum-changing block in the fourth quarter.
  • Viktoriia Filatova led the Timberwolves in with 26 points. Sveta Boykova fell one rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds for UNBC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack were dominant in the first quarter, quickly establishing their lead, powered by Sundher and Kovacevic who combined for 14 of the 'Pack's 21 points to lead 21-11 after the first.
  • The Timberwolves were able to bring it back within six points in the second quarter, led by Boykova who netted half of their of their 14 second quarter points. Unfortunately for UNBC, Jocelyn Orr and Kovacevic combined for seven late points to retain the WolfPack's lead 36-25 heading into halftime.
  • The third quarter started off with a three-pointer from Sundher to get the 'Pack's momentum going as the product of Surrey dropped 10 of her game-high 26 points in the frame. The WolfPack outscored the Timberwolves 20-15 in the third to extend their lead to 56-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Timberwolves put a scare into the WolfPack early in the fourth. The visitors embarked upon a 16-4 run in the opening 2:38 of the frame with Filatova providing eight points to cut the lead to just 60-56. The WolfPack refused to be denied on the night however as two critical game-saving blocks came from Kate De La Mare and Koppes kept the 'Pack in the hunt. Sundher and Kovacevic combined for 12 points in the final four minutes of the game to secure the win for the 'Pack 71-61.
 
NOTABLE
  • The win was the first regular season victory since November of last season for TRU and the first inside the TCC since December of 2022.
  • Nya Derkach, Danijela Kovacevic and Priyanca Sundher were honoured post-game in the WolfPack's Senior's Night ceremony.
  • Both Kovacevic and Sundher set new career highs in points with 22 and 26 respectively in their final games at home.
  • The WolfPack's 73 points were their most in a single game dating back to November of last season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will go on the road next weekend to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat in a double header on January 31 and February 1.
