Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack fall to No. 1 TBirds in straight sets

QUICK FIRE
  • They battled hard throughout but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team couldn't find a way to pull off an upset in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) loss to the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Both Rida Erlalelitepe and Faith Christensen had strong nights offensively for the 'Pack. Erlalelitepe recorded 15 kills on 30 attacks while Christensen went 7-11with a block assist. Keira Gent added four kills on her five attacks.
  • Lucy Borowski was the story of the night for UBC with 18 kills and three service aces.
  • A major difference in the game came at the net where UBC had ten blocks as a team compared to TRU's two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was the closest of the night. Christensen had five kills and an ace in the set to help TRU more than hold their own. Neither team led by more than two points as they traded blows back-and-forth to 23-23. After a UBC kill gave them set point, it appeared that TRU had knotted the match back up before the referees reversed the call to give UBC the victory.
  • TRU struggled to rebound from that setback as the TBirds took the second by a comfortable 25-18 margin.
  • The WolfPack refused to go away in the third. Despite falling into an early 7-1 hole, TRU bounced back thanks to back-to-back kills from Erlalelitepe to go on a quick 5-1 run. After slipping back down by a score of 19-11, TRU again went on a monumental run with Libby Meldrum at the service line to cut the deficit to just 19-17. Within two was as close as TRU would come however, as UBC was able to hold on for the set and match victory.
NOTABLE
  • TRU, who entered the weekend ranked eighth in Canada, are now 10-5 on the season.
  • Christensen's seven kills were her second most in match this season.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "The first set we battled hard. We had a tough call go against us at the end of the set and it's unfortunate that the team's couldn't decide it on the court but we let it stick with us a little too long – those things are going to happen."
  • "By the third set we started to play again."
  • "At the end of the day these are the struggles of an evolving team that is trying to push from the bottom third of the league to the top third of the league and these growing pains in perceived pressure situations are going to help us moving forward and in the playoffs."
  • "Dealing with those feelings and learning how to play this game at a high level as a team is a work in progress but it's something that we are starting to capture as we move along."
UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle again tomorrow evening with first serve scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Vancouver.
