Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

‘Pack can’t keep pace with No. 1 TBirds

QUICK FIRE
  • The No. 1 nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds proved to be too much for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team to handle Saturday night as the 'Pack fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-10) in Vancouver.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rida Erlalelitepe accounted for half of the WolfPack's kills in the match with 11 on the night. At the net Maria Dancheva recorded one solo and pair of block assists.
  • Lucy Borowski again led the way for UBC as she recorded a team-high 11 kills. Tinity Solecki recorded five service aces while Emelie Silovs had two solo and three block assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was all UBC. Issy Robertshaw was at the service line for an 11-0 run to give the Thunderbirds a 13-1 lead that they wouldn't look back from en route to taking the set 25-10.
  • TRU's best frame came in the second. After falling behind 7-1 early, TRU rebounded with a 5-1 run of their own thanks to strong service from Kate Lamothe that cut the lead to 8-6. The WolfPack took their first lead of the night at 18-17 off of an Erlalelitepe kill but the Thunderbirds answered with three-straight points of their own. TRU continued to fight down the stretch, a kill from Hailey Ward tied the match again at 21-21, but it was UBC that was able to secure points late as they took the frame 25-21.
  • In a third set that was reminiscent of the first, UBC rode a Solecki service run from a 6-4 lead all the way to 18-4 as they took the set 25-10.
NOTABLE
  • TRU, who entered the weekend ranked eighth in Canada, are now 10-6 on the season.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "I won't say it's our worst effort of the season - I think the effort was definitely there – it was just the worst execution. We had trouble in stressful times sticking with what we needed to do."
  • "Give UBC credit, they've obviously done their homework. They dug some good balls and we just couldn't seem to execute at a level where we could put in multiple efforts on a point and play clean for that long. They would win those rallies."
  • "Hopefully we take those lessons and build upon it because I don't think we represented ourselves very well here this weekend."
UP NEXT
  • After two-straight weekends on the road the 'Pack will return to the friendly confines of the TCC this coming weekend as they welcome the Mount Royal Cougars to Kamloops Feb. 7-8.
