Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack fall in close affair to start 2025-26 season

QUICK FIRE
  • Three of four sets went to extra points but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team wasn't able to snag a win in their first game of the season as they fell 3-1 (26-28, 27-25, 25-15, 26-24) to the MRU Cougars Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jakob Leinemann paced the WolfPack offence with 15 kills on a .407 hitting percentage while also adding four blocks on the night. Parker Bailey added a further 13 kills in his first career start for TRU. Walker Sodaro registered 33 assists and ten digs.
  • Kale Orr had a team-high 13 kills for the Cougars with Michael McAlpine adding 11 and Cody Hudson nine. Hudson also registered a game-high five blocks for MRU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 16 kills in the first set, five from Bailey and four from Leinemann allowed the WolfPack to take a back-and-forth opening frame. Down 12-9 early, a block put down by Bailey, Lincoln Wagner and Leinemann put an exclamation mark on a quick 3-0 run for the 'Pack to tie things right back up. After MRU earned the first set point at 24-23 a kill from Bailey kept the 'Pack in the fight. The teams traded points from there but late kills from Bailey and Wagner allowed TRU to take the first set 28-26.
  • The second set was just as close. Back-to-back WolfPack kills from Bailey and Leinemann put TRU into the early lead at 14-13. The WolfPack held that advantage for much of the rest of the set and a kill from Wagner gave TRU set point 24-23. The visitors couldn't put the Cougars away however as MRU scored four of the next five points to escape with the 27-25 set victory.
  • After the Cougars dominated the third to take the frame 25-15, the WolfPack battled back to keep things close in the fourth.
  • Finding themselves in a hole at 16-11, TRU rattled off a quick 5-2 run punctuated by a Bailey kill to cut the deficit to just two. That slim MRU advantage held all the way to 23-21 a Cougar attack error followed by a massive block courtesy of Bailey and Mason Sodaro brought the 'Pack back level. The comeback wasn't meant to be however as the Cougars were able to eke out the 26-24 victory to take the set and match.

NOTABLE
  • Jakob Leinemann with 15 kills  and Parker Bailey with 13 kills both set new career-highs with the WolfPack.
  • A major difference in the tight match came from the service line where TRU made 25 errors to MRU's 16.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • Jakob Leinemann had a great night attacking and blocking. We struggled from the service line which was unfortunate. Walker Sodaro coming back from injury had a solid night as well as Lincoln Wagner. We played some great volleyball at times but could not put enough pressure on MRU from the service line. Overall a good first match on the road.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will look to get into the win column tomorrow night when they take on these very same Cougars in a game that gets underway at 4:00 p.m. PT in Calgary.
