Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack receive balanced effort in attack but fall to Cougars

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team had their second-straight strong effort on the road but didn't come away with the result in a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22) loss to the MRU Cougars.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Alex Howard was the danger man for the 'Pack, scoring a game-high 12 kills while hitting at a .346 per cent clip. Lincoln Wagner added eight kills and three blocks while Walker Sodaro recorded 35 assists and 11 digs.
  • Ryan John led MRU with 11 kills. Isaac Karstad added ten kills and seven blocks with Grant Hill putting up 43 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MRU came from behind to earn a tight first set victory by a score of 25-22. Three kills from Jakob Leinemann and two from Parker Bailey alongside three early blocks gave the 'Pack the early momentum as the visitors jumped out to a 19-12 lead. Eight-straight points from the Cougars flipped the set around however as they stormed back to take a 20-19 edge. The Wolfpack rallied to keep things close down the stretch but MRU was able to hold on for the set victory.
  • TRU dominated the second set. A service ace from Walker Sodaro capped off an early 6-1 WolfPack run. The WolfPack never trailed the rest of the way as Mason Sodaro put the finishing touches on the 25-19 victory with a kill.
  • The third set came right down the wire. The teams traded points early until back-to-back kills from Leinemann sent TRU into the lead at 12-9. Again the MRU found an answer by scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 16-13 lead. The 'Pack fought back and earned set point off a Wagner kill at 24-22 but TRU couldn't put MRU away as the hosts came back to take it 27-25.
  • TRU fired in 15 kills in the fourth frame but MRU was able to take the frame 25-22 to capture the match.

NOTABLE
  • Howard's 12 kills were a new career-high for the second-year product of Merritt.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly)
  • Another tough road loss. The guys played better tonight and managed to gain leads in the first and second set but MRU clawd back. We battled nerves at times in those sets.  Lincoln Wagner was solid for us tonight at the net attacking and blocking. Britain Ward came in in the third set and provided a spark and he continued with solid play in the fourth.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will head back out on the road next weekend as they travel to Edmonton to face the MacEwan Griffins for a pair of games.
