Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack win battle at net and on the service line to take down Heat in three

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team started rivalry weekend with a bang Friday night as they bested the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) in Kelowna.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Reigning WolfPack Athlete of the Week Keira Gent led the way for TRU with nine kills and seven digs on the night. Hail Ward finished with eight kills on her 16 attacks while Maria Dancheva added eight kills and five block assists.
  • Korey Jenkins and Kirsten Hill had six kills apiece to pace the Heat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack overcame an early deficit to take the first set as they held UBCO to hitting just .031 per cent. Trailing 15-10, TRU went on a 7-0 run that featured a pair of aces from Madison Maichin to take the lead at 17-15. The 'Pack wouldn't surrender that advantage the rest of the way as Gent had three kills down the stretch and Libby Meldrum ended the set with an ace to give TRU the 25-18 win.
  • It was more of the same in the second. TRU put up four blocks to UBCO's one in the set and finished the frame on a 7-1 run that featured Christensen combining with both Ward and Meldrum for blocks as the 'Pack took it 25-19.
  • TRU jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and never looked back in the third. Christensen had a trio of service aces in the set while both Ward and Dancheva had three kills to send TRU to the 25-17 victory.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm)
  • Generally we did a good job of putting service pressure on them and then we got them out of system in reception. I thought our blocking defence did a good job earning points off of that. That block defence phase of our game helped us secure the victory.
  • Any win on the road is a good one but I expect the Heat to come out a little tougher tomorrow so it will be a good test for us to try and put on another good performance.

NOTABLE
  • The result moves TRU to 7-2 on the season where they are currently second in the conference.
  • The win was TRU's third-straight over the Heat.
  • The victory also secured an important Presidents' Cup win for the 'Pack. UBCO currently leads the head-to-head battle between the two schools 2-1-1 thanks to wins in women's soccer and women's basketball.
  • The WolfPack outblocked UBCO 10-4 and recorded eight service aces to the Heat's four.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack and Heat will do battle again tomorrow with first serve slated for 6:30 p.m. in Kelowna.
