Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

No. 10 WolfPack battle back but can’t topple No. 3 Vikes

QUICK FIRE
  • For the second night in a row the visiting UVic Vikes came out on top in a U SPORTS Top 10 battle as they defeated the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team by a score of 90-74 inside the TCC.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Steve Stinson and Jayden Stephens led the way offensively for TRU. Stinson knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to 18 points while Stephens was 7-9 from the floor for 17 points and eight rebounds.
  • Geoffrey James was electric for the Vikes, tallying 28 points while also racking up seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shadynn Smid finished with a double-double tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An 11-4 UVic run in the middle of the first quarter allowed the visitors to take the early lead. Stephens and Gavin Reis both had four points in the frame for the WolfPack but it was the Vikes that led 20-14 after the opening ten minutes of play.
  • UVic was able to extend that lead in the second. Back-to-back threes from Stinson and Jaeden Bynoe followed by a Dami Farinloye and-one play pulled the 'Pack back within five early in the second. James responded with eight points of his own in the quarter and UVic led by 14 at the halftime whistle with a 48-34 advantage.
  • The WolfPack started to fight their way back into the game late in the third. Trailing 68-49, TRU ended the quarter on a 9-3 run powered by four points from Farinloye to cut the deficit to 13 heading into the final quarter.
  • Seven-straight points to start the fourth, four from Bynoe, saw the 'Pack pull to within six less than two minutes into the frame. The visitors had an answer however, scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points to take a 15-point lead that they wouldn't surrender en route to the victory.

NOTABLE
  • The result moves TRU to a record of 7-2 on the season where they are tied with these very same Vikes for first place in the Pacific Division.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games with the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.
